Re: Aha! (Reply to this comment)

Dear Darla: I've learned to be far too modest . . . and wise to make such unwarranted a conclusion about Epinions. I would say, however, that one of the purposes of these convivial gatherings must be to float before real live Epinionators decisions under discussion by staff. Several such vehicles have been adopted online, by phone, etc, in the last six months or so.
In politics, as we may have discussed, it's called "democratic centralism," and I've come to the conclusion that this method is used by all successful forms social organization except the most arrogant of dictatorships or tyrannies. [Even Stalin prized the method.] In other words, whether you are the President, Brave Leader or Boss Lady, you solicit suggestions, and when several of them coincide with courses of action already determined, you have some hope that you are backing a winner.
I think it fairer to say that a number of us, face to face, and in various other media, expressed ideas which Tolia & Co were already struggling to implement within the strictures of their budget and protocols.
They certainly graciously accepted the suggestions from several of us at the Thirsty Bear.
Happy New Year, Darla.

Dear Adrienne: You definitely are sexy . . . and compared with the whales you swam that afternoon, you qualify at 5'3" in my book as "tiny."
Would you send me Garrett's link? I'll look for it, but I don't think that I received it.
Anyway, I look forward to your report, for I did enjoy the day and your company.

Geez, Alex, you put me at a loss for words. I've been called a lot of things, but I never thought of being 5' 3.5" as tiny.
I know I've been taking my time posting my version of the Meet & Greet, but it should be up soon. I'll be using the link for the Meet & Greet section Garrett sent us, if it hasn't gone bad.

Thank you, darling.

Dear Jack: What do you expect me to do with your mixture of regret and pugnacity?
I take it that you want me to
-- Spit in the Thirsty Bear's Beer, which was really quite good.
-- Confess my bent toward imperialist insufferability (which I was born to, in a working class way).
-- Make dates for you, as if I were Cyrano. (Find your own tiny, sexy blondes).
-- Punch Stephen Murray in the nose if I meet him again because he doesn't like William Hurt's acting.
-- Really p*ss off Mike Bracken (who is a big lad).
-- And hire a movie crew to film my own Epinions Meet 'n Greet Invitational.
I suggest that you move to San Francisco, in order to deal with these matters yourself.
In the meantime, thanks for the praise. Wish you could have been there.

Aha! Kristina Babe: I shall have to get in training so you can heft me on some future flight from Vahalla.
I shall see if I have a recent picture. The one I have on the site is about six years old by now. I don't think there's much difference except for a few more grey hairs (which the camera tends to ignore) and a certain gnomish quality created by my recent accident.
You flatter me, but I thank you.

Well, Ben, I figured you must be doing good works in another part of the forest.
There is some talk of a further get together. If I hear more, I'll let you know.
Good luck in your future career.

Dear graniemose: I don't say that he did it all by himself, but, along with grouch and some others, he certainly has been an important figure in its emergence.
Given the differences the group has had with Epinions management, it was nice to see him at the party.
Glad you liked the review.

You crack me up!!!
It was wonderful to meet all of you. A Princess (Viking at that)? I'll take that title anyday! :)
Also don't forget - you told Paul (from epinions), that you would send him an updated picture of you so that he could get it posted for you. After all YOUR picture does you no justice.
Much love, Kristina :)

if i had known i definitely would have done my best to make it.
i've been meaning to get in touch again recently. my schedule has slowed down a bit (in my third year, classes are mostly done, just starting the long haul to writing my thesis) and i've had time to finally start finishing up trying the restaurants on the list you sent me over 2 years ago.
the chance to meet you and stephen_murray both. would've been nice...

I loved "meeting" so many people I have wondered about through your essay. You Californians have all the luck (except for Arnold). I never knew that Mike Bracken founded Culture Dose. It seems I learn something new every day.

Re: Meet and greet (Reply to this comment)
by macresarf1
Dear Stephen: When I read over the piece that T.R. Black requested, I realized that it was full of sentences like: He said he attended in order to see ME; or, She rushed toward ME, saying she had so hoped that I would be at the Party!
I did some serious reflection and revision, and so, it's fortunate that I toned down my original egomaniacal account of our meeting, and I now remember that we both expressed regret, along the line, that MrEyore was not present.
You did indeed defend splendidly IVAN THE TERRIBLE, PART II. As I recall, you thought the spectacular color sequence perfectly justified and I found it jarring. I think most critics are with you.
A great film, no doubt.
You are welcome to prefer "bearish" to "solid" as a description of yourself, given your predeliction for things Russian, but I would remind you of those Polaroids we have of ourselves with the tiny, beautiful Adrienne. We look like the escutcheon of some 18th Century Russian duchy: Two bears rampant above a doe.
Regards, as always.

Thank you, Jan. My Son Jason is, next to my cat, Tabasca, my greatest companion and my severest critic, as they used to say. He came with me, I think, out of curiosity because he sometimes indicates that the people behind Epinions must be a group of carpetbaggers who will one day rob us of our fortune. He was surprised that the party was: "Okay."
High praise from him!
It was a pleasant day, not the least because he was with me.
Regards.

Meet and greet (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray
I did go to meet you (I was hoping my other guide to local restaurants, MrEyore, would also appear) and to defend "Ivan the Terrible, Part Two" in person.
I was also impressed with Nirav's candor and charm, depressed by how youthfui he looks. (And liking "Cinema Paradiso" is a plus, though he said that it was some other cineaste's favorite movie.)
BTW, I think my profile photo shows a bearish ("solid") being, partially eclipsing Angkor Wat.

Very nicely done, as always.
you said...
"He told us that he had enjoyed the social life of San Francisco,
'especially the girls,' and that he made it a condition of the recent
merger that the operational division of Epinions remain out here."
Well, a man has to have his priorities after all!

Thank you, Bonnie, for the suggestion that the first party was in Orlando; I only remember, for sure, it being in Florida.
LA would make sense for the next one, which Kristina says may be in January. Maybe, you will be enjoying Epinions hospitality at Trader Don's or some place in the New Year.
Yes, the San Francisco meet was very relaxed.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Sounds elegant and laid back compared to the other events thus far. If I remember correctly the Florida one was in Orlando and the same day as the eBay convention in the same town.
I forgot about the term "epinions village", thanks for the reminder and happy holiday.
