A different take on my recent observations about America - the food, and how it differs from my Australian culinary experience.

I'm quite happy to go without mushy peas - I don't like peas of any variety really! And yes, I do believe we are lucky as far as chocolate goes. It's just so much sweeter and more chocolatey than the US'. And I think I'll stick to Aussie Tim Tams, thanks all the same! Thanks for the comment :)

Oz might have the fried mars bars and brilliant fish chipperies, but not the mushy peas of the brits. Funny the little differences aren't they?

By the way - may notice you're lucky in Oz wrt chocolate.. even Cadburys I think Oz and the UK are the only two places where they use the true glass and a half of full cream milk to make it (here in SEA and I think in the US they use milk powder because they can't get enough consistent high quality fresh milk - but it means the chocolate is just rank). That's why it just tastes so much better down under. Taste the Indonesian made tim-tams and you'll know what I mean!

No-one makes fish and chips like the British...

Except the Chinese that live in the UK...

And the Indians...

And whoever else...

Don't tell me it is British - if it is, the yanks have totally perverted it, because it's not very good in the US ;)

Well, I am sure you can find some in any decent chocolate store, or if not there, some sort of international goods store. It's very popular stuff, very easy to find down here and I am sure you can find some if you look! Good luck on the search ;) and thanks for the comment!

admit you have my tastebuds curiouse. I live in the states how can I aquire some of this Lindt chocolate?

You are right chains do seem to have taken over America, but if you look hard enough you can still find some nice little family owned establishments. Ask the locals they can usually tell you where to go.

I enjoyed reading your review.

I would rather hope that you'd agree ;) I had fish n chips twice - once at Captain D's, the other time at Disney, at the British section in Epcot, and I'm not too sure it was authentically British. It was bloody expensive anyway :p

thanks for the support ;)

YES! Krispy Kremes are severely overrated!

YES! Hersheys is only slightly preferable to eating cardboard! (My bro-in-law has realised how deprived of real chocolate his life has been thus far and in his wisdom has made me promise to send him a supply of Tim Tams, Picnics and Crunchies bi-monthly).

YES! Fish and Chips are scary IF you can find them. I made the mistake of buying some at Disney's California Adventure of all places and am still recovering - serves me right for being so gullible. And not a potato cake in sight!

I was in Atlanta for most of the time, never made it up to Boston though I might like to at some point in time. If they have decent bakeries that would be a definite incentive!

Yep, Immigrants have done the job down here too - a lot of the Asian and mediterranean restaurants are the best ones, though there are plenty of good seafood and steakhouse places as well. Thanks for the comment!

Now why is that particular craving the one that females need?! I've not encountered that one before ;) anyway, she can have whatever dodgy sweet and salty foods that she wants - just don't expect me to join in! Blech :I

Yes, Lindt is very nice - I love their chocolate balls, mmmmmm!

Well, just so long as you find something tasty and wholesome, unlike most of the stuff you'll find around. I recommend a cheese and bacon bun ;) Thanks for the comment, and the trust!

I must say I had some halfway decent Pizzas over there - but unfortunately they seem a bit bland, and topping-less. Something which quite a few of our pizza places do well, fortunately!

Thanks for the comment, and happy eating ;)

Boston baked pastry (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
I agree with you about Hershey's, and about American versus Londonian chips (the only comparison standard i can make). But where were you, in America? The Boston area has loads of independent bakeries, some of them quite good.

As for restaurants, we adopt the same strategy i've seen in London: we have immigrants open most of the really good ones. Works for me.

cheers,
- Brian

Hmmm. You did not even mention that true American abomination: the pizza, or less commonly known as: the pizza pie.

If anything has been 'chain-franchised' to death in America it is the pizza.

Which is always the best reason to seek out the 'mom-n-pop' pizza place when one is traveling. For a decent hand-made pizza and the hope that perhaps they have some other decent, real, eye-talian food on the menu also.

Not that I can eat much of that carb-loaded pizza and pasta these days.....

Very nicely done!
