I started looking at Half.com about a year ago when I was looking for a book that even my local bookstore didn't carry and they wanted to charge me an extra five dollars to order an already 30 dollar book. I didn't want to pay that so I started looking for a place online that might sell it. That's when I came across Half.com.
I started to buy books, I actually usually spent more on shipping than I did on the books, but that was okay because even with the shipping it was cheaper than going to the store and buying the book. And most of the time the books that I recieved were in excellent condition, even if they were used. Half.com also has a lot of different things to choose from. They don't just have books, you can buy videos, DVDs, and now they have started selling electronic equipment. I have not looked at their new merchandise because it just doesn't interest me, but I think that it is really great that they now offer it.
I have also put books up on Half.com to sell them. The process is very simple, you just have to tell them what book you are putting up and then they ask for a price...which is usually half off of the normal price or lower. Though I have found books on the site that are much more than that. There are a few little things to remember when putting your merchandise up though. When someone wants to buy your merchandise you have to confirm the order within a certain amount of time and then you have to ship the item within two business days. This rule keeps some people from putting their merchandise up, but they should also know that if you are going on vacation, or are going to be away from your computer for an extended period of time you just have to fill out a little form on the site and they handle it so that you don't have to worry about confirming and shipping within the time period. I don't know many other sites that have that option.
My favorite use for this site though, is for buying college text books. Already this summer I have saved over 60 dollars by buying my textbooks on Half.com instead of from the bookstore. Both books that I bought came to me in great condition, and are almost brand new. They are in better condition than some of the used books I can buy at the bookstore on campus. So this is an amazing resource for that.
One of my only problems with the site is that if you are buying a video or book (this doesn't count for electronic equipment) you cannot ask the seller any questions about the merchandise. There is a little area where the seller can tell you about their item, but more often than not the sellers do not include this information. This comes into play especially for textbooks. Just recently I was looking at buying a differential equations book for my class this coming fall, only the book I need has a CD that I have to have with it. Well one seller didn't mention anything about having the CD included and I couldn't email him/her to ask about it. About two weeks later another of the book was listed and this time the seller added in the comment area that the CD was included. I bought this copy right away and when I received it the CD was indeed with the book.
I think an option to ask questions about the merchandise in these two areas would be very helpful, and maybe more people would be buying the items. Other than that, I really love this site because you can get just about anything you are looking for, and sometimes even find something that you are interested in that you never knew existed. The prices are right, they even have bargain bins where you can find some books for as little as a penny (plus shipping).
