The Bottom Line IF you want to push your own limits, go watch Vai It will make you want to practice 10 hours a day for the rest of your life.

Background
I was first introduced to Steve Vai back when he was with David Lee Roth. In more recent years, I have re-discovered his music and I must say, I've become a real big fan of his.

G3 in Nashville
I was alerted to a the G3 concert at The Ryman auditorium by a friend of mine. I quickly got online and got a pair of tickets. We had missed the pre-sale and were forced to buy the leftovers. We still managed to get good seats, ground level in the middle.

Having never been to the Ryman before, I was a bit surprized to see how small it really is. It is SMALL inside. So technically, there probably aren't any bad seats. In this case, it's probably better to be on the balcony than on the floor.

During the sound check, it was obvious, that the Ryman was NOT set up acoustically to handle a rock concert. Overall I was highly disappointed with the sound of just about everything. There seemed to be a lot of audio level issues (not being able to hear the bass or drums seemingly) and the lack of low-end freqs was annoying. Everything seemed way to trebley.

The show started a little late, I'd say around 7:20 with Yngwie Malmsteen going first. After his set there was a short break. The house lights were up, people were out talking and milling around. Stage hands were moving gear around and setting up...

All of a sudden without any warning, Steve walks out, the stage hands have disappeared, and the house lights are still up. He is walking out with a gigantic 3 neck Jem! Holy cow. The place gets quiet as you see hundreds of fans heads turning toward the stage.

I'll have to be honest in that I don't know a lot of his newer stuff, but from what I've been able to gather some of the songs he played:

The Reaper
For The Love Of God
Whispering A Prayer
Giant Balls Of Gold
Juice

Overall his set was way shorter than anyone elses... being only about 30 minutes total. Those 30 minutes were any guitarists dream. I've watched my 1997 G3 tour video over and over, and nothing compares to seeing Steve play live. Holy cow. It's just mesmorizing to watch him play. So effortless...

Time stood still when he played For The Love of God... one of the most powerful and insightful rock ballads ever! It was akin to a religious experience for me. I absolutely love that song.

His side kick for this show was Tony MacAlpine. Another fine and well recognized guitarist in his own right. They didn't do anything outrageous like "The Attitude Song", but I wish they would have. LOL The overall band was pretty tight, as to be expected.

Other
I'll have to admit, I don't really know much about Steve at all, except that his music is simply amazing and it seems to reach far into the depths of my inner being when I listen to it. I'll have to agree with my friend Philip when he told Steve, "Passion and Warfare changed my life forever." The song, "For The Love of God" is simply one of the most incredible songs ever.

The more I read on the forums about Steve, the more and more I am impressed with his character and attitude towards his fans. Every single thing I've read from people who have stuck around to meet him after the shows, always mention his kindness and real interest in his fans, and I gotta say that is truly awesome.

To be not only one of the best (and most respected) guitar players in the world, but also one of the most amazing composers, and still be able to maintain a close connection with your fan base... that is remarkable. Simply from the standpoint that, he's not all stuck on himself, given his tremendous success in the music industry.

It's just refreshing for me to know that, the only living person (in the entertainment world) I look up to for mentoring and inspiration isn't a fake, but a real, genuine human.
