The Bottom Line If you're going to buy me a car for Christmas, I don't care if it's a Lexus or not. Just skip the giant bow.
You may have recently been treated to one of the new Lexus commercials. You know the ones... the happy holiday scene, with the mom and the dad and the kid all perfectly coiffed and wearing the latest threads. The dad and son are playing with the expensive toy train. It comes along the tracks and dumps a carload of assorted trinkets and . . . surprise surprise, car keys! Or the thirtysomething yuppie couple, out enjoying the frosty weather and building a snowman. How romantic, how quaint! As they search for something to use for the nose, the husband produces a car key . . . to a brand new Lexus! I know I'm in a different league than the Lexus owners. My husband and I recently retired our 1991 Plymouth Sundance when the head gasket entered its death throes. This was just six months after we had laid our 1984 Toyota Corolla to rest. We're now driving in style (for us, at least) in a 2000 Chevy Venture, but life as a one-car family has taken some getting used to. Of course, if someone gave us a Lexus for Christmas . . . Even if I were in a slightly higher income bracket, I would still have to laugh my rear end off every time I see the commercials. The darn things are so unrealistic that they insult the viewers' intelligence every time they're on. What are the finances like in these families, where the husband can hide a $30K purchase from the wife? And you know the typical embarrassment that you get when you buy someone the same gift they bought you -- what happens then? Can you really fit six cars in your four-car garage? And it's not enough that the commercial advocates showing your family you love them . . . with a car. You also have to go all above and beyond when you give them to your wife or husband. Like a set of keys in their stocking wouldn't be just as cool? Don't believe the hype this Christmas. As you wake up this December 25th take a quick look up and down your street. If you see a brand new car with a big red bow on top, be sure and let me know! |
