I've had AT&T Wireless (Digital One Rate)in NYC for two problem-filled years now, so I think I can speak to their strengths (none)and weakness (enough that I've canceled my service).
In general, avoid AT&T wireless at all costs. It's just not worth the aggravation. Want to make a call? Good luck getting a signal. I'd estimate that only 50% of my calls went through on first try. Finally got a call through? You'd better talk faster than an auctioneer on amphetamines, because there's a good chance AT&T will drop the call. And not just when you're driving through tunnels, or obvious places like that where a signal might get interrupted. No, you can be standing still in the middle of Madison Avenue, and just as your important conversation is getting to the good part - buh-bye signal! Apparently, AT&T doesn't think Manhattan is a big enough town to warrant putting up a few more towers.
Add to this lousy customer service, billing charges that rarely come close to matching your actual talk time (you guessed it, everything is rounded up, doubly so if you're roaming)and very iffy roaming (always a lottery when traveling; your phone just won't work in Milwaukee, for example).
Keep in mind - Verizon had to postpone its wireless IPO last year because most money managers in NYC use AT&T, and just assumed that all wireless is as lousy as AT&T. . .
Avoid, avoid, avoid.
