Re: Babylon 5 and Others (Reply to this comment)
by captaind
I will get round to watching Babylon 5 eventually, it's just that I know that's one you really do have to watch right from the beginning and going through every single episode would take a loooooong time!!
You have a point but then again virtually every top ten list on the site would be rendered invalid if you were to take teh view that they must have watched every film of a particular genre. At the end of the day each list is personal, based on preference and what has actually been seen by a particular reviewer, and thus each one will be different. I only mentioned Babylon 5 because I knew there were many fans and there'd be a flood of "how can you not have included Babylon 5??!?!" comments if I hadn't stated why it wasn't in my list.
Thanks for the comment and (yet another) recommendation to give B5 a go!!

Babylon 5 and Others (Reply to this comment)
by danzilla
You state that you havent seen alot of some shows and that you can not rate them as such. Honestly, how can you make a list of "the best" if you haven't watched them all.
In particular i will argue for Babylon 5. This show has to be one of the greatest Scifi shows to have ever been made. It spans 5 years, and covers a story written before the show even went into preproduction. Being a Scifi fanatic, I watched all of startrek (cept voyager.. i cant sit through that again), all of Space Above and Beyond, Firefly, and others. Of them all, Babylon 5 seemed to most coherent. Yes others had a full prewritten story, but their endings were weak in comparision.
Althought it's not saying much, The latest Startrek (ENT) even took a hint from B5 by creating an entire seasion around a single story (Xindi ect).
I guess my biggest complaint is not that you didnt watch a show, but it's that you didn't watch one of the largest contenders in the genre you're writing on.

Against my better judgement (Reply to this comment)
by carstairs38
Against my better judgement, I gave this a VH. It really bothers me to see Babylon 5 not even make your list. That's my favorite TV show of all time, and I'm not much of a sci-fi fan. You really need to watch it. :)

Yep it was the first three - the others are all on the Sci-Fi channel but I haven't really seen them. I've kind of heard of "Greatest American Hero" though. Thanks for the info.
You're right about "nowt" really - it's a colloquial expression used "Up North" - it's kind of a country bumpkin (I guess what you might called a Hillbilly"?) expression.
I think.

Which ones haven't you heard about? I would guess maybe Voyagers! and The Greatest American Hero (and maybe the cartoons?). Both only were on for a couple of seasons (maybe only one for Voyagers!) and were on in the early '80s. Not entirely sure about their quality but at the time (I was just a kid back when they were on) I liked them quite a bit.
The Greatest American Hero starred William Katt (I believe) and was about a guy who finds an alien space suit and when he wears it discovers he has amazing powers.
Voyagers! was about time travel. A dude named Phineous Bogg (or something like that) travels back in time and accidentally hijacks a boy who helps him out in righting things while travelling through time. I liked it quite a bit when I was a kid and maybe that was the target audience too.
The one with the ship Serenity was called Firefly (I remembered) and was a short lived (cancelled after maybe half a season or so) show by Joss Whedon the dude that created Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Cowboys in space. I was just getting into it when it was cancelled.
Earth: the Final Conflict just ended maybe a year or a bit more ago and was on for maybe three or four years. It was created by Gene Rodenberry (the guy that created Star Trek) and was a pretty decent alien invasion show that kinda went into undergroundish syndication after a couple of seasons (I could only see it at like four in the morning on Saturday night/Sunday morning).
Mutant X is in syndication and is about mutants similar to those in the X-Men (kinda sorta). Relatively current and I think it is still going (but haven't watched TV for a while so it might not be).
Andromeda (maybe Starship Andromeda) stars Kevin Sorbo, is also created from an idea by Gene Roddenberry, and is kinda campy but I have gotten into it. It is still going I am pretty sure...
Dark Angel (I believe by James Cameron) starred Jessica Alba as a genetically enhanced person living in a post crash Seattle. I liked it quite a bit and was disappointed that they cancelled it though I wasn't exactly surprised given the choice of the last episode (they cancelled it between seasons though). It was cancelled relatively recently.
Ummmmmmm... Is "nowt" the same word as "naught"? I figured it was when I first read the post but now am kinda puzzled...

Nope, two... "Nout" (should by "nowt" - not that you'll find that in any dictionary so maybe it doesn't count... but I say it does, so it does...) and "thord"... but maybe it;s just your Brummie accent coming out... :-P

I'm shocked and appalled that you didn't include Little House on the Prairie on your list. Don't you remember the episode with the alien cows? Hmmmmm....maybe I'm thinking HeeHaw....
Seriously...great list here!

No, no I've heard of them all. So either you're very young or youth has nout all to do with it. There is, of course, a thord option that I need a life, but I think I'll brush that option under a very well hidden rug. You can't use that, and yes, I hid the rug, for some reason. =D

Absolutely fantastic job here Dave. Great review. Being a big sci-fi fan I agree with you all the way. Oh yeah...Willma Dearing was hot as hell too...whew. Buck Rogers didn't know how good he had it (lol).

Wow, 3 comments all by one person?!?!? :-O)
I haven't heard of some of the ones you mention - either I didn't mis-spend enough of my youth or they maybe weren't all screened in the UK.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts!!!!!!!!!

...and Voyagers!
Liked that show a lot when I was a kid. I am not entirely sure it qualifies but I think it probably does (given that you put Quantum Leap on the list). I haven't seen it since I was a kid (so big caution there given that my tastes have changed a bit:P) but maybe one of these days they will release it on DVD or something...

Er... Oh yeah.
My favs... First would be Bab 5:)
Not sure if I would call them favs but...
I was kinda digging Earth:the Final Conflict when it was on, liked Dark Angel quite a bit, liked the one with the ship Serenity (short lived but I was getting into it), thought X-Files was cool (but sometimes was a bit too dark), love Stargate SG-1, like Enterprise all right, dig Andromeda pretty well, and like Mutant X too.
That would be relatively recent ones... Maybe The Greatest American Hero would be on a list, I dug Quantum Leap pretty well, liked Star Blazers and Robotech quite well (though they are both cartoons so possibly don't count)...
:) A lot of the current shows are a bit cheezy but some of them have grown on me while others I just liked for some reason or another...
I have only seen one episode of Dr. Who but thought it was a lot of fun.

You should check out Bab 5. It is great once you get into it... It is coming out on DVD so it is possible to check it out sequentially (which is the way to go with it) now.
DS 5 improved quite a bit as it went along and had some cool moments...
I kinda remember the same thing about Space 1999:)
