There are several CVS stores within easy walking distance of my home and office. However each and every one of them is, without fail, ridiculously crowded, understaffed when it comes to check out and usually out of what I am going in for in the first place. (There is also a Walgreens in the general neighborhood but it too suffers from the same problems and to add insult to injury, it is dirty.)
Because of these issues, I decided to try CVS pharmacy online back in January. I figured it couldn't be more unpleasant that my current shopping experience and dove in.
The site is fairly easy to navigate. Most of the time I go into the categories (vitamins, personal care items, OTC medicines) and click on what I need. However there is also a search tool that makes it easy to find what I might need.
In addition to the shopping categories and the search tool there is a sale listing. This is a nice idea but is clumsy. If I want to browse I have to go through all the items which are arranged in alphabetical order. There are usually plenty of things on sale but scrolling through screen after screen is not what I had in mind. Lately, I have taken to saving the newspaper circular for the week I am shopping. That way I know what is on sale and can go directly to it through the search key.
Recently a shopping list function has been added so I can store my list of regular buys (kleenex, Q-tips, cotton ball, etc.) and cut down on the time I have to spend on the site. I really like this feature.
During the shopping process you can select to have your merchandise shipped to you or you can pick it up at a local CVS. I have not used this option because it seems like I would run into the check out problems in store with this but it might be worth a try. I have also not ordered a prescription on line but it is an option.
Shipping charges are about $4.95 for 7 to 10 business days but if you order over $40 of merchandise, there is no shipping fee. All my packages have arrived within the the shipping window and have occasionally contained a sample of some products which is a nice addition.
Check out is very easy. During the check out process, there is a pop up menu that reminds you that you may have forgotten something and shows a few items. The list of items always includes batteries for some reason.
Generally, I am very pleased with CVS Pharmacy's online store, with one exception. The online store doesn't carry all the beauty items that the brick and mortar store carries. I like a certain brand of eye make up remover (Almay). I can always get it in the stores but not on line. The same is true for mascara, lipstick, etc. It isn't a huge problem but it is an annoyance.
I think that the thing I like most about this online store is the convenience. I have one less errand to run and that means I get to spend a little more time doing something I want to do rather than something I have to do.
