R&B did its thing this year, thwarting convention and deepening in sensitivity.

Given that we largely listen to different musics, I don't know how heavily I should count your recommendations, but you _are_ the second smart person I've heard completely gush over Cookie: an Anthropological Mixtape. And at some point, I have to start respecting that and, at least, writing it down for future consideration. Excellent writing here, as usual.

cheers,

While I enjoy Crazy In Love, if you honestly think Jay-Z sounds inspired during his guest verse, you must not be familar with his work -- it's a weak verse, even his heavenly cadence can't hide that. But then again, it's not a spot on his own album, so it's not a big deal. Just my two cents.

Hella nice article.

Great points on Justin, MJ, Christina, Keith Murray and racism in the music industry in general. You were 100% on point. The first time I heard Timberlake's first single on a so-called "black radio station," I couldn't believe it. Surely one of the deejays were going to call him out for it, but everyone kept their mouths shut. People always talk about how sad it is that black rock n' roll originators haven't gotten their due and I'm like, "why stop with them? The hijack hasn't quite stopped yet..."

Excellent piece. I got an email a few weeks ago thats inspired me to write a piece on sort of on a related topic. If I can ever dig myself out of this backlog of CDs I need to review I'll get on it.

aww say it aint so...you have to admit that the way Justin is marketed is offensive. When you lie and it has social and racial ramifications, that is inexcusable...I'm sorry. The kid did NOT grow up on soul music. He never sung a R&B styled song until his vocal coach on the MMC, Robin, showed him how...that's called appropriation...no arguments. And now he recruits the leading producers and gets all the credit...UNACCEPTABLE...point blank

plus the songs are pretty bad

Agree with you on Michael, disagree with you on Justin...and Christina...and Madonna...but you definitely put tit down. I need to give tha gerald album a listen...and glad someone besides me gave props to Anthony Hamilton. This kid is major major major!!!
