South Of France Restaurant
Dec 22 '03
The Bottom Line I'm still looking for that "most romantic" restaurant in Atlanta. I recently ate at Nicolai's Roof and it comes close for atmosphere and falls short for the meal itself.
If you are looking solely for romance, then do not look to South of France restaurant on Cheshire Bridge Road. If you are looking for FANTASTIC food then this is a "do not miss" restaurant. They are Zagat rated, but I have not yet checked to see what the rating is.
There is a review posted in the lobby proudly declaring the restaurant as having been voted the "Most Romantic Meal" by a local publication (readers voted) for that particular year (1998.) However, I don't think a romantic meal and romantic atmosphere are the same in this instance. Even the review said the interior was "fusty-dusty" but if you could get past it, the meal was worth the surroundings. With that, I would totally agree.
The floors are tiled in dark, unattractive commercial tile. The walls are dingy white, the tables are metal, covered by cloth tablecloths; there are candles on each table, but also bright lights and ceiling fans. Plastic plants grace the walls. The ambiance reminds me of a late 1960's diner that needs considerable sprucing. There is a fireplace and I am surmising this is what qualifies South of France as "romantic" for some people.
If you are doing a search on the Internet looking for the most romantic restaurant in Atlanta, South of France might pop-up as included on that list, but beware of that title and just go for the wonderful food. I have not eaten at a better restaurant in France during any one of our several trips.
Bon appétit
