SprintPCS Customers Get Their Unlimited Minutes At 7pm But They Don't Get Text Messaging!!!
Dec 29 '03
The Bottom Line The fact that text messaging is so hard to access, if possible at all, will eventually be SprintPCS's downfall.
Okay, I don't know why SprintPCS decided to handle text messages this way. Many people who have a SprintPCS phone always complain that they can't text message. Well, they can, sort of. This is why I switched my SprintPCS Service to AT&T Service.
Okay, SprintPCS doesn't let you send a text message if your phone doesn't have a Mini-Browser. Now, I know that a few monochrome phones(phones with a black and white display), like the Samsung SPH-A460 or the Motorola V120chave a mini-browser. However, most monochrome phones like the Samsung N240 do not have a browser. Most color screen phones like the LG LX5350 do have a mini-browser. Not all color phones do have a mini-web browser, though.
How SprintPCS Handles Text Messages
To tell you the truth, you cannot write a text message on your phone. You can only write them on a page that you access on the web from your phone.
On a Monochrome Phone without a Mini-Browser
When someone sends you a text message, you will receive it on your phone. However, you cannot respond to them, and you cannot send any text messages to anyone.
On a Monochrome Phone with a Mini-Browser
You can receive text messages. Once you receive the message, in order to respond to it, or to just send a message, access the web, then select the Messages option, then select the Send a Message option. After that, you can type in a message and send it.
On a Color Phone without a Mini-Browser.
While I have not really seen one of these phones, I assume that it would work the same way as the monochrome phone without a web browser.
On a Color Phone with a Mini-Browser
To be able to receive or a text message, you must be subscribed to a Vision plan. If you do not have a Vision plan then you will be unable to receive or send messages. To send a message or to respond to one, access the web, then select the Messages option, then select the Send a Message option. After that, you can type in a message and send it.
Why They Do This
Okay, I really don't know WHY they handle their text messages this way. However, the reason that there is a difference is because with the old monochrome phones, they allowed you to go online whether you had a plan or not. When you went online with a monochrome phone, you used your talktime minutes. This meant that if you had unlimited night and weekend minutes, you could surf the net all night and weekend!!! However, with the introduction of Vision, web browsing was now split from the voice portion.
Now, in order to go online, you purchased a certain amount of data that you could use, and you would pay extra for any extra data that you used. This forced you to pay extra in order to browse online. Just another way for SprintPCS to make money.
