With the price of RAM having plummeted, it'd be a good idea to take advantage of the situation, wouldn't you agree?
RAM (aka Memory)
RAM is probably one the most ignored component of one's computer. The general rule is: the more the better. Say your body was your computer- RAM would be how many hands you have. The more hands you have, the more and the faster tasks can be done. Don't get too carried away, though- performance will plateau to a certain point depending on your operating system and then start to go down again if you have too much. Too many hands ...and you can't move! ;)
Just keep this in mind: There is no practical use for 1GB or more of RAM at this point in time unless you are running Win2000 Server. Win98 plateaus @ 192MB. Win2000 @ 512MB.
RAM should be plentiful, but it should be fast and reliable as well. System performance and stability are very reliant on the RAM, so you should do the right thing and do your homework. Seeing as how you are reading this, you are already on the right track! :) Micron manufactures some of the best RAM out there for both stability and reliability. Fortunately, the people @ Crucial (a division of Micron) have put together a website to help you out... and more so!
CRUCIAL.COM -WHY THESE GUYS?
Well, these guys have been around for over 20 years now. They are the number one manufacturer in America and one of the leading three in the world. They are the only consumer supplier of their own memory- you are buying direct- no middle man, no third parties. Because you are buying direct, you can expect the best service and the best prices.
AND, because you are buying online, they'll take 10% off the price, as an added incentive.
CRUCIAL.COM -THE WEBSITE
At first glance, you might be saying, "OK, how do buy RAM? I don't even remember what I can support!" NO PROBLEM!
In three easy steps, they'll have it all the information you'll need including what your motherboard will take, how much it'll take, and how many modules slots your motherboard has. Just find the drop down box in the middle of the web page and...
1) You start off by selecting the manufacturer of your computer and/or motherboard.
2) Next you choose the model.
3) And, finally the model number! You're done!
You should have a listing of all the RAM your motherboard can support with all the different types, sizes, and specs.
ONLINE SUPPORT
Confused? They offer live help just like AOL Instant Messenger or ICQ where a Crucial representative will chat with you to answer any questions or inquiries you might have.
PRICES AND SHIPPING
Like it was said before, these are some of the best prices you'll see and every once and a while(almost every time I visit, but not always), they'll offer FREE 2nd Day shipping! Even when it's not free, it's very reasonably priced.
SELECTION
The overall selection is excellent. I was a bit disappointed in the fact that they didn't offer any bigger modules bigger than 256MB for PC2100 and PC1600, but that's alright. Most people's systems (Win95/98) only make use of maybe 128MB, anyway. WinNT users may want 160MB or more. Win2000 users may want 192MB or more. Even if you don't nessesarily need larger sized DIMMs than 256MB, the option would be nice. Besides, why are 512MB DIMMs available of the slower (and only slightly cheaper) PC100 and PC133?
I'm running Win2000 right now and can support PC2100 on my motherboard- but there are only two DIMM slots so have to go with larger DIMMs than people with more DIMMs. I wouldn't mind having a single 512MB DIMM in there so I'll be set and still have room to expand, so I emailed them about it. I was told that bigger DIMMs will be available soon for PC2100. I guess I can hold out. So, for now I bought a second 256MB DIMM and there is a noticable difference in certain apps. I do a lot of imagery and video editing so I'll take all I can get :)
