We build and maintain web sites for small businesses and friends. Someone came to me several months ago and already had their Domain Name and Web Hosting setup through GoDaddy and asked us to establish their web site. This was my first experience on GoDaddy, but I have used numerous other hosting services in the past 12 years. The criteria I use for evaluating a web host are: reliability, support, features, performance, ease of use and price - in that order.
GoDaddy gets good marks for performance and price, but didn't impress me with their reliability and support. The site went down on several occasions and support was sub-par. I am beginning to really despise the large outfits. They typically lure you in on price but fall short in their delivery, and you treated as just another anonymous number. After 3 months, I convinced the customer to switch to another host and we are pleased with the outcome.
GoDaddy is probably acceptable for uninformed user, but if your site is for a business or other more critical use, you would be wise to select a host based upon the characteristics I listed above, even if it costs a few more dollars.
