Led Zeppelin: A Fan's Tribute
by excremento | Dec 30 '03
Led Zeppelin has to rank as one of the three or four most important musical groups ever. Delve deeply into their music and you'll find out why.

My Theory (Reply to this comment)
by the_clansman
First off, I thought this was a very well written review, Led Zeppelin is one of those bands whos music can give me goosebumps. My theory is that anyone who doesn't like Led Zeppelin is untrustworthy. I don't trust anyone who doesn't appreciate the greatness of Led Zeppelin. I do not own their full collection, and the only live stuff I've heard is off HOw the west was won, but I still consider myself a huge fan, I have their four disc set, and love every minute of it. It really makes me mad when I put on Kashmir and someone says "Look, Somebody covered that Puff Daddy song.", those people should be taken out of their misery. Puff Daddy should never have even attempted a Led Zeppelin cover, he has no talent and as a rapper has no right to massacre a great rock song the way he did. Their are very few bands that I would consider up to the task of re-doing Zeppelin songs, and pretty much every one of them is split up by now. Anyhow, great review (don't want to get caught up too much in rant).

PS- Achilles Last Stand would have to be my favorite Zeppelin song, only because not many songs can keep me interested for 10 and a half minutes.

PPS- Zeppelin Rule!

I enjoyed your essay on a topic for which I share a similar obsession. My collection includes solo work as well as the band itself. I have about 20 titles on CD and in the area of 175 cassettes.

I would have to disagree on some of your live version opinions. I find some Kashmir performances from 1977 to be right up there with 1975. I thought the way they segued into it from Black Mountain Side was brilliant. In 1980 they tended to get lost in the repetition. Listen to Zurich from 6-29 for a particularly embarrassing version.

Over the Hills and Far Away I found to get more and more interesting. The 1975 versions I found to be more toward the blues side while 1977 saw some spacier explorations of reverb. I have seen reviews of the Destroyer set which were unfavorable. My first bootleg was from 5-30-77 in Landover, MD and it remains a favorite, though it's hard to compare with Listen to this Eddie.

I am certainly open to trades if you are interested. You can email me if you would care to and let me know what you thought of the reunion tours with Page and Plant. It's good to know fanatics like me are still out there.
