I'm a cynical kind of woman...I don't like angels, and I hate those inspirational jokes and stories that friends always send me by email. But, I do have one big weakness, teddy bears.
I have a huge collection of these fuzzy creatures, and they have overtaken my house. I don't have any children, but any children who visit us give our house the seal of approval. We have bears, and we have cookies. Enough said. I have bears of all different kinds, including one of a kind artist bears, and the cheapest mass produced bears. I lived for three years in Europe, and enjoyed the many bear shows there. When we moved back to Canada last summer I was appalled to see how much of our shipment of goods was bears.
So, it's inevitable that I would fall for Beanie Baby bears. I resisted and resisted, and then someone gave me Peace Bear. This is a lovely tie-dyed hippy bear with a peace symbol on his chest. It was love at first sight. When I left for Europe four years ago, that was the extent of my Beanie collection...one small bear.
When I returned to Canada last summer I was accompanied by many many Beanie Baby bears, and I like each one of them. My husband is a willing accomplice in my search for bears, and he would often find another bear show for us to attend in Rotterdam, or in Amerongan, or in Germany. Beanie Babies are not so common in Europe, and when I did find them I grabbed as many as I could afford. I refused to pay the outrageous prices that some of the bears were commanding, so I still have holes in my collections. For instance, I never found Brittania, the British bear, at a reasonable price.
For a long time, the market for Beanie Baby Bears, and for Beanies in general, was considerably inflated. Everyone wanted them, and everyone was willing to pay. It seems that the market has settled down and I can get the new bears for around 10 dollars.
I have several full sets of bears. For instance, I have Erin, the green Irish bear, in three sizes...the larger Beanie Buddy, the regular Beanie Bear, and the tiny bear sold by McDonald's. They look very cute together.
Each bear has a heart-shaped ear tag, telling the bear's name, the date of birth, and a small poem about the bear. If you wish to preserve the collectibility of the bears, it's important to protect these ear tags. I'm not so fussy, and some of my bears are tagless.
I like all my Beanie Baby Bears, but I do have some special favourites. I'd like to introduce them to you, and tell you a bit about them.
Huggy was born on August 20, 2000, and is a very pale shade of beige. He has slightly curly hair, and brown ears, and he is particularly soft. He has black eyes and nose, and wear a brown and gold chiffon tie. A very cuddly bear.
Kicks was born August 16, 1998 and was one of my first bears. He is a sporty bear with a black and white soccer ball on his chest. His colour is a nice bright frosted green.
Aurora is a bit of an unusual Beanie Baby bear. She looks more like a real polar bear, with a bigger snout, and an open pink mouth. She has very soft white fur and cute black paws. She was born February 3, 2000.
Cheery is a very bright bear with silky soft white fur decorated with rainbows all over her body. She has an applique of a shining sun on her chest and a multi-coloured tie around her neck. She was born August 18, 200, but didn't come to live with us until recently.
Hero is the latest addition to our Beanie Baby family. He is a brown bear, with the softest fur of all the bears. He has a big snout, and the cutest blue tie and collar.
I could go on forever, describing my Beanie Baby bears in great detail but I think that's enough. My husband always says that it's a good thing we only collect the bears and not the hundreds of other Beanies that are available.
Some collecters hide away their Beanie Babies to protect them from dust and such, but mine are just on a bookshelf. I want to enjoy them, not guard them as an investment.
I highly recommend Beanie Baby bears for anyone with a soft spot for cute cuddly toys. I should think that children over about the age of three would enjoy them as playthings.
So, that's my weakness...now I'm going to go and review a really nasty murder mystery.
