Serious Sam did one thing which people like me should be really thankful for. It bought the simple ‘Kill em all’ kind of action gaming back to the gaming world. I think we should all blame it on people at the Valve who by made the epic game half-life. They gave us more story, more complexity and more realistic environments. But if you ask me, Serious Sam is a slap in the face for gamers like us. It is a reminder for people like us to remember that we really need to play a game, which is loads of fun. With is doom style gameplay – killing monsters, finding secrets and opening doors, Serious Sam is serious fun all the way.
Story - Like Doom, this too has a story which does not matter. You are Sam “Serious” Stone, muscle bound monster killer, sent back in time to ancient Egypt to destroy an Alien race from another dimension to take over another galaxy. And you know the rest…
Gameplay - This game has some cool looking levels - simply huge, open killing grounds for you to do battle against hordes and hordes of monsters. Did I say hordes? That does not do justice to the game. This game has more monsters than any other First Person Shootout ever created! At times you have 70-80 monsters on the screen at once. This is no exaggeration. You are going to strafe, jump, run backward. It is terrifying and exhilarating. At times it gets too difficult. I consider myself a good FPS player and played normal, yet I had to switch to God mode quite a few times. I recommend you play the easy level. The AI of the game is not great but it makes up for that with sheer numbers.
Monsters -The monsters are very innovatively designed. Some of them will give you nightmares!! You will laugh when you see them the first time, and then spent the rest of the game despising them and cursing them. My favorites are the beheaded Kamikazes who charge at you screaming and detonate when they come near you. Also the werebulls who are huge bull like creatures that charge at you and make some serious damage.
Graphics - Croteam fashioned a proprietary 3D engine for this game and it works like a gem. Large open spaces like sand dune and Oasis along with the breath-taking Egyptian Architecture are beautifully rendered. You also have effects like sub flares and shimmering water, which makes the game come alive. It is due to this engine that there can be 100 monsters on the screen all jumping and shooting. A great engine!
Sound - I think this is one negative aspect of the game. It is nothing much to write home about. There are a few nice comments passed by Serious Sam but they are way too few!
This is a kind of game you will play when all other games bore you. It is a pure shot of adrenaline and is the most brainlessly pure fun game produced in the recent times.
