The Bottom Line Follow these 20 rules to make your car buying experience more enjoyable.
So you want a new car. There are a few things that must be considered in order to make this process go more smoothly. Buying a new car does not have to be a headache. On the contrary, it can be a somewhat fun and pleasant experience. To help make the experience more enjoyable, follow these 20 rules that i have found very affective. 1) Know what you want This is an impeccable first step when purchasing any vehicle (whether new or used). There are tons of choices out there. Do you want an Sport Utility Vehicle? A luxury vehicle? A Sports Car? A mini van? A sedan? Its all about your life style and what you can afford. Its not only about the actual car price. The question of what you can afford goes beyond this. Maintenance and gas mileage must also be considered. For example, in general, a Sedan is going to get much better gas mileage and have lower maintenance costs than a Sport Utility Vehicle. Your life style must also be considered. Do you have a family that needs a Sport Utility Vehicle for hauling the kids around? Questions such as these must be considered when purchasing a vehicle. 2) Check your prices Know what your vehicle is worth. You can do this by checking the value of your vehicle by visiting the Kelly Blue Book web site at www.kbb.com. DO NOT PAY MORE THAN THE PRICE LISTED ON THIS WEB SITE. 3) Make a list The next question you must ask yourself is how far are you willing to travel for your vehicle? Then, make a list of every dealership in that radius so you can go to each dealership personally. 4) Set your price You must now ask how much can you afford to pay for the vehicle? This is the maximum amount that you are going to be paying, no more. Make sure that, although this price is within your budget, it is reasonable to the actual value of the vehicle. This is usually within $10,000, although some dealers are willing to go lower. It is also a good idea to set your price even lower than you are willing to pay for the vehicle to give you a little negotiating room. 5) Do not budge You must now not budge on this price. Do not let the dealer haggle you. 6) Consider buying used Buying used is also an option. If your budget does not fit within the price range of the new car you want, used cars can be found significantly cheaper. Look in the want adds and call around. The same rules apply here. Negotiate. Do no buy a used car from a dealer. Buying a car from a private party avoids taxes and the haggling of the dealership. Most dealerships make their profits on their used car lots. If you do purchase a used car from a private party, make sure to ask for the records of the vehicle. Has the vehicle had the proper oil changes (usually every 3,000 miles)? Has the vehicle every been in an accident? Does it have any rust? Has it been garage kept? 7) Lease Leasing is like throwing your money right down the tubes. When you do this, you are driving a vehicle that is not actually yours. You are renting it and paying a certain amount every month. If you must revert to leasing the vehicle, then it is out of your price range. There are certain exceptions to this rule, however. Some corporations pay for part of if not all of the leasing costs of the vehicle for their employees. Also, if you are only going to be keeping the vehicle for under two-years, this may also be an option. If this is the case, make sure you can work those monthly payments into your budget. If you can not, then you will get yourself into debt that you will not be able to escape from. 8) Finance There is one rule to remember when purchasing any kind of vehicle. DO NOT FINANCE. Make sure you have the money for the vehicle in your hands to pay up front to the dealer right when you purchase the vehicle. Financing is the perfect way to get yourself into financial shambles and never-ending debt. 9) Avoid the taxes You must find out if your state has taxes state taxes on new vehicles. If not, find out if any state within the near vicinity that doesnt. Avoiding state taxes saves your thousands. 10)Timing is everything Make sure to plan your car buying experience. Be sure to shop around when the new years models are coming out and the dealers are trying to get rid of the previous years. This is when the dealer really wants to unload the previous years new models and make room for the new ones that are arriving. 11)Demand that tax, tag, and title be included in final price This is to avoid any surprises on the final invoice. Dealers like to not include the taxes, tag, and title to not be included in the final negotiating price and then tack them on the final invoice. 12)Your in Control! Remember the saying, The customer is always right. The dealer is working for you. Dont forget this. Dont let the dealer haggle you, haggle the dealer. Remember that they are there to sell you a car and will go to any means to do so. 13)The Female Advantage If you are a female purchasing a new or used vehicle, use your sex appeal to your advantage. Dress sexy the day you go out shopping for the vehicle and flirt a little with the sales associate. This does not hurt and could get you a lower price on your vehicle. 14)Take advantage of Rebates There are several rebates that dealers offer. Two of the most common are a college graduate rebate and veteran rebate. Mention after the negotiation process that you want the rebate. 15)Don't be afraid to walk away If the dealer is not willing to sell you the vehicle you want at the price you want, do not be afraid to walk away. Go to a different dealership and ask for the exact same price. Continue on doing this until you find a dealer that wants to sell you the vehicle you want at the price you want. 16)Know your dealership Ask friends and family that have dealt with the dealership before. Was their experience positive or negative? Could they negotiate with the dealer or were they pretty set on their price? Did they encounter a lot of haggling? 17)Re-negotiate After you have offered your price to the dealer, they will counter with a figure that is closer to theirs. This is why it is important to set your price slightly lower than what you are actually willing to pay for the vehicle. This way, the dealer and you can meet half way and you can pay what you are comfortable paying and the dealer can get what they feel is a reasonable price for the vehicle and both parties leave happy. 18)Look the final invoice over Before going out to purchase your vehicle, make sure you can read an invoice. When the final deal has been set, look the invoice over very carefully and make sure no extra charges have been added and the final price is the price that was agreed on. If it is not, then demand that the charges be removed. 19)Look the car over Give the vehicle one final over look and make sure that it is the perfect vehicle for you with all the options you want. This is the vehicle that you are going to be driving for the next two to three years or longer. 20)Enjoy your new vehicle! Now its time for the fun part. Enjoy your vehicle that you have worked so hard for . |
