The first time I saw the trailer for this movie I knew I had to see it opening night. Well, I didn't see it opening night, I saw it the next day.
This movie opens up with Nicole Kidman's character waking up from a dream screaming. Does that tell you anything? The movie takes place on the Channel Islands in this massive castle or mansion, but it looks like a castle to me. Kidman's character's kids are allergic to the sun so the castle stays dark at all times which is in itself weird and creepy. I know I wouldn't stay in an old creepy looking castle without any lights but that is because I'm a chicken. Must be all the horror movies I watch.
Anyway, along come these three people to do housework; the other servants disappeared one night. Two women, one elderly and the other younger, and an elderly man. Kidman precedes to take them around the castle barking rules to them. One rule being that once you enter a room you must lock the door and you can never open another door without first shutting another one. There is no electricity and the curtains must be kept shut when her kids are around. It's all for their safety so she says.
Things are not well there. The little girl sees ghosts and talks to them. Things begin to disappear and a panic arises. Fear is taking over and there is nothing anyone can do.
I really liked this movie. I love psychological thrillers and this is one of the best that I've seen. You don't have to see the scary monster to get scared right out of your seat. I know people other than me who were also scared out of their mind while watching this movie, because we all screamed together.
Isn't that what movies are for? To take you away from your mundane way of life for a couple of hours and place you in your wildest imagination. That's why I love movies.
But, does Kidman and the rest of them stay? Do they leave? Would you?
I would.
