Store Safety - It happened to me, could it happen to you?

What happened to me could happen to you. Or worse, it could have been your child.

Yeah, I'm ok now. From what I can tell there was no permanent damage. It just hurt like the dickens for a while!

Thanks for reading! :)

Even a single can of pop can be painful when dropped on your foot, I know a case of it had to hurt your back. I hope everything turned out OK for you.

Straw That Broke The Camel's Back (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
It could be a case of the straw that broke the camel's back--meaning that, while there weren't people around the displays at the time, there might have been some around there earlier whose actions had caused the display items to be just enough lopsided that simply the presence of one or more other people in the area would be enough to cause them to topple.

The previous maladjustment might have come from rambunctious kids running up and down the aisles and running into/messing up display areas.

So this article would be a reminder to customers why it's important to not let their kids run through stores like bulls in china closets.

But the maladjustment might have simply come from people doing legitimate things such as choosing merchandise from there.

This would show that there should be a safer way of displaying things, because items and displays do get moved throughout the day.

All store owners--from the big guns to the independents--would do well to read what you've written in hopes of making them more aware of dangers that an arranging of a display might cause so that they could come up with ways of doing this better and more safely.

I do a lot of shopping at Dollar General, and their stacks are very short ones.

Instead of making towers by piling products on top of each other--except in the case of stacks that are very low--they have shelves along the walls and throughout the store.

There are no floor-to-ceiling free-standing towers, and stores that have those would be wise to go to Dollar General and see how they do things!

Hope you're feeling better!

Get Well Hugs!

that this happened to you Lisa. Wonderful (?) that they were more concerned about the pepsi than your well-being. It would be good to document everything that occurred, as it is easy to forget details such as time, exactly what happened etc. You may also want to contact a good personal injury attorney.

Hope you are better soon, and thanks for the warning to everyone. I know the Home Depot stores had a lot of problems with objects falling down on customers and injuring them.

I hope you're doing better. Thank you for taking the time to share your story.

I see these displays all the time and am amazed that someone doesn't get hurt. Obviously, they can and it's amazing that there aren't any safety guidelines regarding these displays!

Take care,

Peggy

I've heard that a lot. :) I went to the doctor and they took XRays. Nothing broken. Mild bruising (this is Thursday, however, and it happened Saturday). I was given muscle relaxers, more meds for pain and some anti-inflammitories. Hoping these help.

I'm a SAHM with an Autistic 5 year old son, and an Active Duty Navy wife with a husband who is gone a lot, but "technically" I don't "work". Not for money, anyway. :)

Thanks for all of your thoughts and well wishes!!

What I can't believe most is the lack of compassion everyone around seemed to feel. How terrible!

Hope you feel better!

Hmm, if she's the litigious sort, she could probably retire. Guess I'm a bad boy. But I hope you're OK. That's the main thing. If your injuries are more than a bruise or a sprain, I definitely would contact and attorney. If not, I'd still be tempted to ask them to compensate you for time lost from work, etc. Keep us posted.

Food for Thought (Reply to this comment)
by califocean
We go into stores all the time, items piled high, and yet there is no local safety requirement? I am going to be so much more cautious after reading your article. When my 6 year old daughter was 3, I took her to K-Mart to try on some shoes. I had her walk in them in the aisle. I was no more than three feet from her when she tripped and fell, hitting her head on the hard floor. She had a nasty bruise and bump on her forehead, and I felt like a terrible Mom for not being quicker in catching her. (I took her to the Doctor, and although there were no signs of a concussion, I had to watch her for any signs...I was so upset and worried.) I went to the Store Manager and brought it to their attention that the accident occurred, and that they might consider carpeting the area to eliminate a worse injury. I didn't feel like they could appreciate where I was coming from at that moment...because I was asked if I was going to sue! Crazy!! I did end up talking to a lawyer just to see if it was worth pursuing to get the stores to become more safe. The lawyer stated that since I wasn't interested in a monetary award, that it wasn't worth his time. Although this isn't about items stacked and falling on a child or adult, I feel that you should pursue a claim with an attorney. Wal-Mart may just try to white-wash it and try to pay you off or fight it. But if the Media can get involved, (FoxNews does wonders for bringing such things to light...Bill O'Reilly, Hannity and Colmes, etc.) it may be worth it. I wish you a speedy recovery, but don't let them off the hook.

but someone has to bring a lawsuit against Walmart for these incidents.

It happens more than you know, we hear of them a lot. I see it a lot.

Im glad you werent seriously injured (broen bones, head trauma) but when its a back injury it is there and probably wont go away.

I hope you feel better son and at the very least they should pay your medical expenses.

& youre right, if it was a child, they wold have been dead or in the ICU. Thats jsut isnt acceptable by any means.

:0) (((hugs)))

Thanks, Lisa, for turning your awful experience into an article that will help everyone who reads it.

I do hope your pain goes away and I empathize with you completely. I was hurt in a motel office once and everyone absolutely ignored me, afraid of the lawsuit, I guess. I'll never forget how it ruined our trip.

Take care and thanks again,

I am always amazed at the attitude that some stores give you when you tell them about a dangerous situation. Be it a spill on the floor or in the case of Wal-Mart - the night stock crews that leave the shrink wrap on the floor. That stuff can get wrapped around your foot in a split second and if you fall and get hurt, good luck getting someone to help. Stores are all about the mighty dollar and trying to squeeze as much product as the can into a small space - hence the huge stacks of soda, bottled water and canned goods.

What's even worse is when you tell them "Hey, there's a spill over there", they look at you like you are insane. If someone slips, falls and gets hurt and decides to sue the store that means everyone pays for it in the form of higher prices. I'm not saying people shouldn't sue stores but 75% of the accidents that happen can be avoided if they walk the aisles and do a proper clean up.

Glad you weren't seriously injured and your child [or any child] wasn't in the path of the cases, I dropped a 12 pack of soda on my foot and it hurt, can't imagine what a 24 pack would feel like.
