Did you know about VETERAN'S HOMES for our Retired Veterans?
by gaelkm | Jan 07 '04
As an alternative idea to consider for your senior years, if you are a Veteran or the spouse of a Veteran, this is a possibility.

Looking for family of Edmund L Williams (Reply to this comment)
by sheryl58
I am looking for family of Edmund Lee Williams who lived in the Yountville veterans until he passed away 3/9/1998. I beleive he was my biological father whom I never met.
I was born in 1949 in Oakland, California while he was in the navy. His mother lived in Santa Clara valley and my mother took me to see her often when I was small until she passed away.
I never got the opportunity to meet my father, my mother never wanted to talk about it and for years I didn't know where to begin. Seems like I found him a little to late.
Anyone that knows anything about him I would love to hear from you, his family? what was he like? who was he?
My email is sheryltownsend@yahoo.com
Thank you

Penguinman got a medical discharge in 1968 and receives a disability pension from the DOD. So he is eligible to all vet's privileges. And when I married him almost seven years ago, I also became eligible, although I didn't know it until last year!

We'd love to live in the Napa-Sonoma area but it's way far out of our reach. How ironic that we may wind up there after all!

Thanks for good information -

My husband has two honorable discharges: one each from the Army and National Guard. We'd never heard of Veteran's Homes for veteran's retirement years!

Thanks for sharing~

Thanks, Bobbo. I liked that saying a lot too and had to alter it just slightly so it would fit into the 15-word limit. I think it originally went:

"If you can't be a good example, you'll JUST have to be a horrible warning."

(Hope you like my new one too. Found that somewhere; of course, it's not really true!)

This sounds like a nice place for veterans--you described it well.

By the way, your quote on your profile page,

If you can't be a good example, you'll have to be a horrible warning

made my top 40 recently. Good job!

Re: Watch out for entry fees... (Reply to this comment)

I do know that this particular home (and most likely all three of the Veteran's Homes in California) does/do NOT have an entry fee. I don't know if other states have this. It would be too bad if they actually do.

Thanks to all who made comments.

Watch out for entry fees... (Reply to this comment)
by pilotpat
Notice that many of these homes have huge entry fees - often much more than the cost of a similar or larger sized home in the same area. A better option may be to buy a home outright and put $5K or so a year into long-term care insurance (about what it costs at 65 yrs old).

As a vet myself, though hopefully a ways off from this option, I appreciate the ideas and I know they do help some people. But I'm quite wary of them.

Thanks for the review,
Pat

I forgot to add that there is a California Veteran's Home very close to where you live in Chula Vista. It is only a few years old and really nice! Check it out if you are in Chula Vista! ~gael

I can only speak to the California Veteran's Home, but the way they work it is based entirely on your income. So if you are getting for example, $6,000 a year, your room + board would be no more than (47%) half of that, or approximately $3,000/yr. I think the costs are very fair...hope that helps!

My husband is in the Marine Corps right now. He has 8 years in right now, and he'll be in until he reaches his service limit and the MC forces him out :) I have heard only briefly about these homes. We pay roughly a quarter or $1, something like that, every pay day for this purpose, or so I thought? I was under the impression that was supposed to make them free later on when you need it. Can you clarify for me, if you know ??

I didn't have a clue about these homes.

I found that we have two here in Michigan, but yours sounds nicer, so I'm gonna have to move to California when I make it to retirement age (not a bad idea in any event). It seems like the states may take better care of the vets than the Feds do.

Thanks for writing this.
