The Bottom Line Hit me baby one more time.
OK, so "collecting" unrequited love songs is sort of a hobby of mine- as I've mentioned, they're quite rare, so I find it interesting to try to hunt down all those in existence. And I need somewhere to archive them, and I'm thinking that some other people out there seem to be interested in the subject, so...here's yet another mix. She Hates Me by Puddle of Mudd Yeah, it's mallcore, aka poser metal. And a lot of people say that this song is pretty much just a bunch of yelling and cursing. But...this is one of those songs that really affects me; every time I hear it, it makes me happy and I just want to sing along really loudly. For raw anger, you really can't beat it, and the lyrics definitely have a certain something. Lyrics example: I tried too hard And she tore my feelings like I had none And ripped them away She took all I ever had No sign of guilt No feeling of bad It's Only Make Believe by Conway Twitty It's classic pop by a singer who later turned to country music. The melody is very plain, and you can definitely tell it's from a long-ago era, but the lyrics say it all. Lyrics example: My heart I can't control You rule my very soul My only prayer will be That someday you'll care for me But it's only make believe Heartfelt by The Butchies This an alternative rock song that drips with angst, so it's good for those darker moods. Lyrics example: I've been walking around asleep Thinking about you There's absolutely no way I can tell you What you mean to me I Can't Be Your Friend by Rushlow This is a great country song about being so in love with someone who is "just a friend" that it becomes too painful to remain in the friendship with them. When I hear this song, I think of the website "Agony and Rapture," which is a site dedicated to unrequited love. Lyrics example: And it's killing me to know you Without having a chance to hold you And all I wanna do is show you How I really feel inside I can't be your friend anymore Electric Blue by Ice House This song has a lot of personal significance to me. Kind of an interesting thing- this is the first song I ever heard that reminded me of my unrequited love, and only *after* it made me think of that person and I paid a little more attention to the lyrics did I realize that this song is actually one of the rare songs that really is specifically about unrequited love. Lyrics example: If a boy had a chance A chance with someone like you Are you gonna break his heart Let him cry for the moon Oh I had a dream For a moment I believed it was true Though I'd have given anything Just to be there with you I can see that it may be just a vision of you Standing here waiting as I'm breaking in two On my knees, help me, baby, tell me what can I do Change of Heart by Cyndi Lauper Yeah I was going to try to lay off the 80's pop this time since I was so heavy on it in the last mix, but I had to include this one. All of Cyndi's hits were great songs with really catchy tunes, and this one is an "I'll wait for you forever" type of unrequited love song. Lyrics example: Here I am Just like I said I would be I'm your friend Just like you think it should be I bide my time Waiting for your change of heart Mr. Johnson's Head by Insane Clown Posse Yes, this is a psychedelic rap song which is heavy on the cursing and is about a kid who decapitates his teacher, so it may not be for everybody. Also, the main subject of this song isn't unrequited love- the two main subjects are the Eurocentric way that history is taught in American schools, and the plight of the outcast whom no one notices or cares about. But unrequited love is definitely in there at the beginning, and also I think the whole outcast theme goes hand in hand with unrequited love. Also, maybe it's just me, but I find it hysterically funny to refer to the person you like who doesn't like you back as "the b*tch that I love." Lyrics example: I'm staring at the freak That I know I'm in love with But she don't even know my name It's always been the same Bobby's Girl by Marcie Blane We're going to close out with a cute little teenybopper song from the 50's that makes people mad because of how sexist it is! There's just one thing I've been wishing for I wanna be Bobby's girl That's the most important thing to me And if I was Bobby's girl What a faithful, thankful girl I'd be Each night I sit at home Hoping that he will phone So there you have it, another collection of unrequited love songs. I hope you've enjoyed this vital information about musical culture! Or something like that. |
