I wish I had read this years ago.
Having returned recently and not written anything in quite some time, I will definately use this as a guide.

No worries, if you aren't already familiar with HTML there's no reason you'd know!
Glad this was useful to you.

brilliant! The *MOST HELPFUL* thing I have read on Epinions. Thanks for taking the time to do this, CaptainD. Wish I'd had it a few months ago. Lol! :)
Oh, btw, where you're describing html code, you accidentally put "TEXT YOU WANT IN BOLD" instead of "TEXT YOU WANT IN italics." ;)

Re: ... (Reply to this comment)

Hey Joshua
It's a good question and one I'm not 100% sure of. When rating products down, it doesn't necessarily mean that you won't earn IS, even if yours is the only review on that product. It sometimes helps if yours is a highly rated (but negative) review on a product that most people have given positive reviews to as far as earning potential goes, but even movies I've given scathing reviews on (and mine is the only review of that movie on the site) have produced some pennies. Actually, doing negative reviews is quite good as far as showing your readers that you're objective and honest, as opposed to just rating everything highly (or reviewing only things you like) in an attempt to earn more money.
I can't give a complete answer here as in many ways the Income Share system remains a complete mystery and is likely to be such forever! But while it's difficult to predict how much money a particular review will earn in time (I've tried, and failed, to find a real pattern in there), in general the more reviews you post, the more you'll earn. Also when you say smoehting's good, people are more inclined to believe you if you also review things that are bad.
Hope that answers your question to some extent!!!
Thanks for the comment,
CaptainD

Dave,
I just came across this review. It was quite helpful. As I was reading this paragraph:
Well, it works through a thing called Income Share that is, when a product is sold through the epinions site via one of their trade partners, a share of the profits from the commission is given to people who have reviewed that product....
...I was wondering if "financially" there was any incentive for reviewing poor products. I spend most of my time in Books and Movies lately, so for example, this paragraph made it sound like I should spend more time reviewing Godfather-ish movies rather than movies I'm telling people to stay away from.
...on the other hand it doesn't really matter, since it's only a matter of pennies.
Anyway, do you have any thoughts?
Thanks, Joshua

Re: Great article (Reply to this comment)

Ms M:
I actually wrote this before I got any hats, and lived in the hope, as you do now, that eventually I'd start earning more money when I'd done more reviews. And this is (in general) the case - but it's still a laughable amount. It does depend to a certain extent what categories you write in, but even then, without a hat you're goint to earn peanuts.
SInce I got my TR hat in Movies, my IS has increased about sixfold per month - and my Advisor IS from 2 blue hats is about 50% more than my IS. But even then, I wouldn't write just for the money - I can earn more in 3 hours at work than a month on eps (and I'm earning per month what I had earned in the previous 13 months when I hadn't got any hats! - including the $20 bonus in December!).
It's a good point you make though - I think there are still people joining eps based on old descriptions, from the time you really could make money from it. I'll put it on the list of points to expand on in the third edition.
Thanks,
CaptainD

Great article (Reply to this comment)
by msmarques
But maybe you should have emphasized more that the money is laughable. I was pretty surprised about the bonus this year. Was this the first year?
I thought that perhaps I just hadn't written enough reviews per year to get a bonus. That's one of the reasons why I started writing more reviews again.
I have a love-hate relationship with writing reviews at Epinions. I love to write, but often I think that the money here just isn't worth it.

I'll be sending new folks to this too.
One thing though that seems to be in debate. Advisor bonus. I'll tell you here and now I make much more from the TR status than I do from the Adv. bonus. If given a choice, I'd take the TR every time...
The only thing I would really miss with the Adv status is the ability to give MH ratings from time to time.

Hey-
Thought this was well-written. I did find a couple "errors"
(I had previouslu stated - inaccurately - that in Canada the redemption amount was $10 to -
previously not previouslu- and to should be too. Minor things certainly not worth rating you lower for.

"Strange that, whenever I sign out my reviews are always within the top 10 placements."
That's mainly due to the hat and the fact that you get a lot of ratings.
"How odd, I demand a lengthy, expensive investigation at Dave's expense."
Hmmm.... You are the one getting the inflated IS, and you want me to fund an investigation into why. Somehow, I think not. :-P

"(Although I did realize that, if I'm not signed in as me, all of _my_ reviews don't automatically float to the category's top. Which failure I hope is a temporary error soon to be fixed.)"
Hey, the same thing happened to me! Obviously a bug. (Of course, when we've both written a review of something, they should be joint top...)
"The voodoo doll part is an obvious bluff, and I'm amazed you fell for it. The monkeys use pinatas, pellet-guns, and a remote control tuned to a satellite dish close-captioned in Sanskrit: it's science."
Hmmm.... I wonder if these are the same monkeys that are churning out the complete works of Shakespeare?

learning and sharing (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
If someone trusts you, you are much more likely to have a higher placement when that member views the list of reviews.
Oh! So I learned something I didn't know. I'd noticed that good people usually clustered at the top of any given product, but I didn't realize that was a special service to me. (Although I did realize that, if I'm not signed in as me, all of _my_ reviews don't automatically float to the category's top. Which failure I hope is a temporary error soon to be fixed.)
it is a public secret that the Income Share formula involves some monkeys and a voodoo doll
