Down is warmer, lighter, and compresses smaller than comparable synthetic bags. While it is more expensive, it is the choice of serious outdoorsmen.

Excellent advice on buying down bags - my two comments are that (I don't think, upon reading your advice through, that you mentioned these but maybe I missed it...) while you mention that down bag are more expensive than synthetic, they also tend to last much longer, assuming proper care (i.e. storing either in the storage sack or completely opened out - I put mine in a big plastic storage container so that I can stack it in my cloet, and NOT storing it in its stuff sack/using a compression sack as little as possible.) Although down and synthetic fills will both lose their loft over time (the fibers get crushed), down seems to last longer.

Another thing to consider, particularly when considering 1-2 season vs 3-4 season bags, etc., is the actual method of construction - is it sewn through (shell and lining stitched together at regular intervals, leaving spots with no down that can get cool), or does it have some sort of baffle construction (either continuous tubes that allow you to shift down from top of bag to bottom depending on temperature, maybe baffles that are slanted so they overlap, so no cold spots, non-continuous baffles that don't allow to shift around laving cold spots, etc. etc.)?

CyndiA if you need any help or suggestions let me know. I can suggest excellent starter gear at low prices. Just shoot me an email and tell me what you're looking for. If the troop has a required list of gear also send that and I'll tell you what to get. Troopleaders and parents tend to overload their children with too much gear or gear like cast iron frying pans which is very wrong. If you want your child to have a good experience pack light!

Eli is a Cub Scout and moves up to Boy Scouts in March. I'm slowly buying quite a bit of outdoor gear. I'm glad you're writing here and giving advice on outdoor products. It does help a lot. I also like your links at the bottom with more info on different products. That is really helpful.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments. This is my first essay/advice piece. I can't seem to get some of the products I want to review listed, so I thought I'd write some advice instead.

MumMumMum, depending on the age of your son you might want to go with a synthetic bag for a couple of reasons. Younger kids (boyscouts for example) tend to be careless. Taking care of a synthetic bag is easier and cheaper making it a better choice for beginners not sure of their skill or commitment to the sport.

on this well written comparison. Thanks to your review I now realize I own a long, mummy shaped, synthetic filled, 20 degree sleeping bag. My Coleman bag has worked great for me the few times I've used it, but sadly I only get out camping a couple times each year. The odd thing about Michigan is on a 70 degree day in the fall it can still be 35 or so in the early morning. Buying a high quality sleeping bag can make the difference between a great weekend trip and a canceled one.

Keep up the good work,
Openroad
