MORE GREAT ANIMATED MOVIES - Great Disney Cartoon Classics And More!Jan 21 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Great Animated Movies! Regardless of how old you are, you're never too old to sit down and enjoy a good Disney movie. But don't think Disney is the only company putting out good animated movies. DreamWorks is becoming very well known for their work as well. Other studios have dabbled in animated movies with minimal-moderate success. I tried not to relist movies I had in my first review of this genre, but in the case of DreamWorks I had no choice. Anyway, check these out I think you'll like them... ============================================================ DISNEY: The Black Cauldron - This is one of my favorite old skool Disney movies. The little fuzzy guy, Gurgi, is one of my favorite Disney characters. Young Taran must find the Black Cauldron before the Horned King takes over the world. Taran gets help from a pig, princess, and Gurgi to overcome the odds and emerge victorious! Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs - My favorite Dwarf is Dopey, he's such a stud. I think I relate to him because of the big ears. And he gets a kiss from Snow White, what a pimp! This is a timeless, classic fairy tale. Created in 1937 it's still capturing the attention of kids over 60 years later! 101 Dalmations - If you like dogs, you'll like watching 101 Dalmations. How many spots can you count? This isn't a very funny movie, like most Disney movies. The villian, Cruella de Vil, is kinda creepy for a cartoon character. Cruella wants to off all the dogs and make a fur coat. Will she succeed? The Sword In The Stone - The future King Arthur comes from a lowely background, but with the help of Merlin his tutor Newt (young King Arthur's name) ascends to the throne. The funniest part is when Merlin changes Newt and himself into squirrels and they both get chassed around by girl squirrels. It's a fun movie. Pinocchio - All he wants is to be a real boy, is that too much to ask? Maybe it scarred me as a child, but I've never liked the part where Pinocchio is on that Las Vegas like island and turns into the donkey. Jiminy Cricket is a good character, and always helps Pinocchio. It's not often you get to rescue your father from the inside of a whale! The Little Mermaid - Ariel and her friends prevail over the Octopus-Woman Ursula, so Ariel can have her man and spend a day on warm sand. Sebastian, a crab, is my favorite character. He's funny and serves as a good balance to Ariel's youth and rule-breaking. The Little Mermaid broke the platuea that Disney had hit in their storytelling. It was, and is, a breath of fresh air. Beauty And The Beast - Even bookworms find love! Belle is a book reading young woman who has caught the eye of the town jackass aka - Gaston. Belle's father ticks off The Beast, and Belle takes her fathers place in The Beast's mansion. She slowly teaches him about love, and they fall for each other. But Gaston has to cause a little trouble first... Fantasia - I saw this movie for the first time in the theater when I was a kid. But I didn't enjoy it much, because my arm got smashed in the car door and I had a fractured elbow. But after seeing the movie later, I'd say it's pretty good. A little odd...and with no real point, but good. Fantasia is a collage of animation and music. Dancing alligators and broomsticks were pretty funny. Fantasia is unique if nothing else. Fantasia 2000 - This sequel to Fantasia, is less groundbreaking since it follows in the same steps as the original. However, this is a good movie with some great animation and music. I like that they had Donald Duck in this one. He's always a great character. Lady And The Tramp - Spaghetti never looked so good... Just kidding! This 1955 classic is a fun movie. It makes you wonder what dogs are really thinking! Tramp is the streetwise mutt that likes the high class Lady. Tramp helps her, then romances her. The Jungle Book - I was always a big fan of The Jungle Book. Baloo is funny and a decent singer too! This is a 1967 film bringing to life the story by Rudyard Kipling. It's amazing that most of Disney's best films are so old but still seem fresh and are still fun to watch. Mowgli is raised in the wild with a pack of wolves. He later grows up with a fun loving bear - Baloo and a far more serious pal - Bagheera. King Louie is a great character, he's the leader of the monkeys in the jungle and wants to learn how to use fire like men do. Sleeping Beauty - Does Aurora prick her finger and lose the happy ever after ending, as predicted by Maleficent? Not if the three fairies Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather have a say about it! Three cheers for Prince Phillip who slays Maleficent, who had transformed into a dragon. Cinderella - I like when the mice sing their Cinderella song while they're making her dress. It would be terrible to be treated like Cinderella is in this movie by her stepmother and stepsisters. Luckily, Cinderella's fairy godmother helps her win the heart of the Prince. That famous glass slipper helps Cinderella prove she's the one the Prince wants. Robin Hood - This is the classic Robin Hood story told in usual Disney fashion. I really like how the characters are animals. It's makes it all a bit more playful and enjoyable for kids. This is a fun adventure movie. Dumbo - I really don't like the part where the mouse and Dumbo get drunk. That part's always been a little too trippy for me. Do they have to show animal abuse so graphically in this movie?! Look how they beat Dumbo's Mom! Just kidding, but seriously... Dumbo has a special place in my heart, I know how it is to be teased for big ears. Ha ha! The best song on this movie is the one the crows sing - "When I See An Elephant Fly." Atlantis: The Lost Empire - Milo Thatch is a dorky linguist that wants to find Atlantis. Luckily, he gets the chance. But it's not what he expected. I don't like the animation much but the storyline is decent. There aren't any animal characters, they're all humans. And the music isn't as good as you'd expect from a Disney movie. But it's worth watching. Peter Pan - The best telling of the Peter Pan story ever done (live action or animated). Peter Pan isn't my favorite movie that Disney's done, but it's on the list of the best. Neverland, is a fanciful place with Pirates, mermaids, fairies, the ability to fly, and best of all - eternal youth! Join the adventure! DREAMWORKS: Shrek - If you don't know, this is the story of an ogre that doesn't like to be around other people. He has serious self-esteem issues. It's a kind of twisted fairy tale, that makes fun of many classic fairy tales, it's great! Shrek and Donkey save a Princess from a dragon and later from a demented King. It's one of the best animated movies ever in my opinion. There's a sequel coming out too! Antz - Imagine this...the movie is about ants. Yes, those crawlies that congregate in uncountable masses in your sidewalk cracks. Z is the main character, he's kind of a clumsy guy. Anyway, he has to help save his colony from destruction. It's worth watching once, if you're really bored. Sinbad - Legend Of The Seven Seas - Not only did this movie not get much advertising, it doesn't stick closely with the original Arabian Nights storyline. Still, it's a movie worth seeing. The voice acting is top notch - Brad Pitt, Michelle Pfeifer, and Catherine Zeta-Jones give fine performances. This is a good action movie with a little romance too. OTHERS: The Last Unicorn - This is a really great cartoon. It's a very serious cartoon, as different from a Disney movie as a watergun is to an M-16. It's based on a novel by Peter Beagle. A unicorn is searching for her any other of her kind, but they are nowhere to be found. She must hurry before she's destroyed by the Red Bull. And this Red Bull doesn't give you wings! Once she teams up with Schmendrick and Prince Lir, she finds more success. This is probably not a good cartoon for really young children, but the older kids should like it. The Hobbit - I don't like the animation but overall...good movie. It's stays very close to the original story by J.R.R. Tolkien. This cartoon, like the live action series by Peter Jackson, is serious so it may scare young children. It's worth watching though, especially if your ADD/ADHD prevents you from reading the book. FernGully - I was very surprised to find that this cool movie was not made by Disney but rather, by Fox. This is probably every Environmentalists favorite movie as it highlights the fact that cutting down trees is bad. The villian in this movie is a spirit type guy that grows powerful as the huge tree cutting truck cuts down the forest. Zak is the main character who's working for the logging company. He quickly learns the faults of tree cutting and helps Crysta, a forest fairy. Comedy is provided by Batty Koda, the best character in the movie! His voice is done by Robin Williams. Good stuff...see it if you haven't! An American Tail - This is the story of Fievel the immigrant mouse. Good stuff! It's a heart warming story and it's spawned a couple of pretty good sequels too. Fievel Mousekewits is travelling to America from Russia with his family. But during the boat ride, Fievel gets lost at sea! Once he reaches shore Fievel must work hard to find his lost family. I think the second movie An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, is just as good if not better than this one. Well worth watching. ============================================================ Final Comments: Drop a comment and let me know what some of your favorites are! I always like hearing from people that read my reviews. If you think I forgot any really good ones, let me know. The reason I've seen all of these (and more) is because I used to have a girlfriend that had literally - every Disney movie ever put out on DVD. I like that DreamWorks has begun to compete with Disney. DreamWorks puts out cartoons that are a little more mature and not as cheesy as some Disney movies.
