hey there...

Actually I am reading this one by Bierce:

http://www.epinions.com/Shadows_of_Blue_and_Gray_by_Ambrose_Bierce_and_by_
Brian_Thomsen_and_edited_by_Brian_M_Thomsen

...right now. A very odd collection of Civil War period short stories. He does know
how to string a sentence together. Some day I actually hope to get the review done.

Thanks again for the read/rate/comment.

I especially like the fact that you gave the all-time, heavyweight quotation champion, Ambrose Bierce, his just due. Kudos to you!

hey there 'happy'...

Thanks for the comment. Yes, it's true, I have a source that I get many from, this one among several others. But it is amazing how familiar some of them become when you find different times when they might be used.

I think the practice of leaving quotes has really expanded my knowledge of certain people and their thoughts about certain ideas.

Thanks for the read/rate/comment. It is good to see your user-name again.

hey there Tim...
'King of Comments' . . .hmmm. I have certainly been called worse! I can live with that.

hey there again Michele...
Thanks for that little pointer. Yes, using the 'search' box is the easiest way to find something. Actually the site just went to the 'google search' function a few weeks ago. It was actually better before. Much easier to see what the actual quote was.

hey there Patti...
I have no problems with critics. Especially if they make their point and move on.

I have never taken anyone's question of 'where do you get the quotes?' in a negative sense. I do feel bad though that I have never 'shared' until this review. I think I had that problem in kindergarten also, sharing I mean!

hey there Simon...
Shame on you! A comment is never a 'useless waste of space'! Well . . .almost never.

Thank you all for the comments . . .and quotations!

I was waiting for the :-P at the end of your article - that would have capped it off well to your "critic".

I'll go on record as being someone who in an essay made mention of your "endless supply of great quotes - where does he get them?" And I never meant it to be critical in any way. I always look forward to your comments because of them. I'd venture that there is mostly a positive reaction to your use of quotes than a negative one.

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Patricia,

To find a quote about quotes (as I did), use the search box at the site. This may be the best way to find useful quotes on many topics, as you don't have to rely on how the site chose to categorize quotes.

Oh, wow! That is one neat-o-matic little site there! I've always loved the quotations you left; they have made you the King of Comments as far as I'm concerned.

Way to go, and thanks!

To each in your own turn (or 'tern' for _haggis_...)

hey there kath...
It looks great on your user page. I think I might add it to my own. Perhaps something I should have done long ago...

hey there mridula...
'More than a few' have asked where I get them from. But really, I assumed anyone could 'google' and find many sources of on-line quotations.

hey there artemisadorned...
If your 'favorites' list looks anything like mine you will never be able to find it! Glad you found it of value Linda.

hey there _haggis_...
You are so right. No one would be that critical. Epinions is, above all, a warm and welcoming place, free of all slight, slander, and warm fuzzies all around.

'Coat of mail' . . .hmmm, that sounds like my recent bout of correspondence with the IRS.

hey there garym...
A 'yup' from you is worth at least two sleeper quotes. Thanks!

hey there msmarques...
Thank you! See how influential a simple quotation can be...?!? If only we all could/would take the time to say 'Thank you', here on Epinions or in our 'real life' worlds.

Thank you all for the comments . . .and quotations!

Citing source of quotes (Reply to this comment)
by msmarques
Yes, I have seen that challenge on your use of quotes. At first I thought perhaps you weren't citing the authors of the quotes... but you are.

I don't really think it matters where you get your quotes from. I've used Bartlett's to find apropos quotes at times, so I don't see how using an on-line database is a problem.

Thanks for sharing this resource!

God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say "thank you?"

Criticism (Reply to this comment)
by _haggis_
In the past, indeed, to this date my use of these quotes from Brainyquote.com has been challenged.

Oh come on Tom. No one would be that critical. Would they?

Hags

Doubtless criticism was originally benignant, pointing out the beauties of a work rather that its defects. The passions of men have made it malignant, as a bad heart of Procreates turned the bed, the symbol of repose, into an instrument of torture.
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

or maybe this one is better:

He that respects himself is safe from others. He wears a coat of mail that none can pierce.
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Take your pick.

Tom, I've always loved that you take the time to add quotes to the comments that you write. Very clever and a very personal touch to add. It wouldn't be a Sleeper54 comment without it. :)

I went over to brainyquote and took a peek. I tried to find a quote about quotes so I could quote it to your quote review. I couldn't find one so I snuck over to a movie quote site. Still couldn't find a quote about quotes but I liked this one:

That was a static filled, triple scrambled, microwave transmission between two soldiers talking in Mandarin Chinese.

it made me snicker. Thanks for the fun review.
