You'll have to make your way up to the Charles - it's a real enjoyable trip in its upper reaches and they aren't all that far from RI either!

I'm glad I helped take you down memory lane!

I never saw the river when it was really dirty, but from what I have heard to what it's like today is an amazing difference. You see very little physical garbage in the majority of the river, the water is fairly clear (it's tannish from the marshes and swamps it goes through) and there's a lot of wildlife in the water.

I just rely on the turtles - in the Blackstone I never saw one - in the Charles, they are everywhere.

...from a paddlesport fan!

I have been kayaking for a year but I used to row in college. I remember reaching this area of the Charles while going westward for some of the longer workouts where it didn't seem as urban and it almost looked "country" like. I believe it was after the Northeastern boathouse, but I could be wrong.

Yes, the blackstone river isn't clean, and after last year's flood was downright nasty. I am RI'lander, and haven't been on the Charles for the better part of 10 years, but thanks for bringing back memories!

The towns you list are all the places I used to go when I was growing up in the heart of the area you describe. I remember as a very young kid being amazed when we would drive over the section of the Charles on the Medfield/Sherborn lines and think this was the same river that became so much bigger in Boston.

I canoed on it countless times but back in those days it was still considered 'dirty water' and we were always told that if you ever fell in you'd have to get a whole series of shots. Nice to see they cleaned most of it up, although I read recently that they still advise caution in some areas after it rains as toxins can be released when muddy sediment is stirred up.

Hopefully no more fish with horrible tumors are being caught in the Charles. I still think I would pass on eating anything caught there though.

Nice review.
