Radar Jammers - So You Wanna Send A Jam Filled Donut?

The Bottom Line The world is far from perfect...

In a perfect world, lead footed drivers would have the opportunity to pay a large sum of money for a device that would jam police radar, thus allowing them to speed as much as they want. I have a dream that one day I can drive with Fortunate Son by CCR playing on my CD player and speed past a cop going as fast as I can, and he wouldn't be able to get a speed reading. Well, that dream hasn't quite come true...

-The Radar Jammer-
*So, how does traffic radar work? Well, you drive past a cop and he/she blasts you with a radar gun (or laser gun), and then the gun receives a speed reading. If you're going fast, then he/she will have the authority to pull you over and issue you a speeding ticket. These radar guns run on three different bands to date, X, K, and Ka bands. X-Band is obsolete and is almost non-existent in most parts of the United States. The most heavily used band is K-Band, and then Ka-Band is used less but proves to be harder to detect. So, why get radar detectors, when you can jam the radar source?

-It's Illegal-
*All of this radar junk is controlled by the FCC. It is according to them a Federal felony to jam a police radar gun. The fines can run all the way up to $75,000! That's far greater than the increase of insurance premiums if you don't use a detector... But when you figure out that you're in the real world, you'd most likely want to invest in a high-end radar detector instead.

-What About Laser?-
*Laser proves to be the most feared traffic enforcement tool. Once you're targeted by laser, you're most likely gone. Even if your detector picks it up, you're most likely already clocked. However, there is a way to counteract laser. Now you might be thinking, "But I don't want to pay $75,000 for a fine!" But there's one major loop hole, amazing... Thank you! The lasers are controlled by the FDA, and not the FCC. Therefore, it is legal to use laser jammers in cars. I've written a separate review on laser jammers so click on the below link if you're interested in learning more about them.

Laser Jammers

-Current Jammers-
*Other than Rocky Mountains pieces of crap, there are a couple of jammers being sold for around $500-$600. They are marketed as the Phantom RCD and the Scorpion. I have never seen one in action currently, but they supposedly jam X and K band guns. They DO NOT jam Ka-Band. However, since many of the radar guns use DSP processors (Digital Signal Processing), jamming them gets a little bit more difficult. It's not worth buying the current jammers since they are illegal and you can be fined, plus they aren't as effective as people wish jammers were.

-Rocky Mountain Radar-
*Rocky Mountain Radar is probably the most notorious name in the radar business. They are a brand that avoids the "J" word, and instead claims that their products have "scramblers" built-in. They are said to be perfectly legal. They supposedly jam X, K, Ka, and laser bands. Wow, the whole nine yards! So, how does it work? They pick up the radar being shot off from the cop, and then it adds in an FM chirp which makes white-noise for the gun so a reading can't be made. Also, Rocky Mountain Radar claims that all of these "scrambler" products have 360 degree laser scrambling. The way that it's supposed to work is by creating a IR field in front of the car using LED diodes, and thus causing the laser gun to not get a reading. So, does it work?

*NO! All of the products by Rocky Mountain Radar that promise to jam radar and laser are completely worthless. They won't jam anything better than a piece of crap mounted on the dash board. So, how do I know? I've tested enough Rocky Mountain Radar "scrambler" products next to K-Band speed posts which show you your speed, and they always received an accurate reading. Also, if you ask anyone else, their products don't do anything. How about laser, that's feasible, right? Well, Rocky Mountain Radar's theory is pretty cool. But it would only work if the laws of physics were repealed. The way that today's laser jammers work is by emitting strong bursts of light at about 904nm towards the lidar gun. But with a field of light in front of the car (If there even are LED diodes!) would be useless since light interferes when it passes through another light source... But when they are no longer in contact, both waves come back to their normal attributes. In conclusion, Rocky Mountain Radar do absolutely nothing. Oh wait, there's something that they do better than any other radar maker in the market... They manipulate consumers without a lot of experience in buying a horrible product.

-The Verdict-
*It's sad that we don't live in a perfect world where we can completely jam X, K, and Ka radar bands legally and easily. You can somewhat jam X and K with the risk of getting caught, and Ka-Band is just out of the question. Laser, yes you can jam it legally! If there were things out there that were legal and jammed everything like Rocky Mountain Radar claims, then my foot would be a very happy foot. But as for now, it's happy using the best radar detection and laser jamming abilities out on the market. So forget the radar jammers, it's a fantasy, just go with a great detector and laser jammer.
