Skeeter, light the candles.....Mama's in the mood for RomanceJan 31 '04 (Updated Mar 25 '04) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Get out the wine, the candles and grab one of these films... Have you ever been in the mood for a really great romantic comedy film? Maybe you've seen enough blood and gore, crashed cars, buses and airplanes. Sometimes the reality of life itself reaches a point that your one and only desire is to escape. Forget the job, forget the cleaning, forget the bills. You just want to fly off to that lovely world where men and women (or women and women...or men and men....whatever floats yer boat) make that mystical, magical connection that we all refer to as "love". All of lifes' obstacles can be overcome if we're just with that one certain someone, right? Yea, you know what I'm talking about....a "chick flick". They can be fluffy, they can be sappy, but they always make me smile first, then reach for a Kleenex before the final credits roll past. Here, my friends, are my absolute favorite Romantic Comedy films. Are they the "best", according to film critics? Of course not. I just know what I like. These are the Romantic Comedies that find themselves played over and over in either my VCR or my DVD player. Just for a little fun, I've added the "Testosterone Factor" at the end of each film. This is simply a little teaser that may give some of you fellas an incentive to watch each one. 10. Overboard (1987) Leading Guy: Kurt Russell Leading Gal: Goldie Hawn When a pampered and spoiled rich young woman has an accident and falls off of her yacht, she suffers amnesia when she wakes up in a hospital. Being a real "B", there is no one, including her husband, willing to claim her. Except for one fella....a fella who feels this woman owes him something. He manages to convince the hospital that she is his wife and takes her home to his lovely chalet. Well, ok, he takes her home to his dump and his 4 unruly sons. This one is so much fun. Goldie is a treat to watch here. Testosterone Factor: Boats, Tools, Bowling, Bugs in the mouth 9. Murphy's Romance (1985) Leading guy: James Garner Leading gal: Sally Field A divorced woman has made the decision to start all over in a new place. She and her son work together to fix up an old house and a barn to begin their own horse training business. She tries to fit into the community and becomes friends with the town pharmacist, an older gentleman, who is also the towns' most eligible bachelor. It isn't long before the womans' ex-husband shows up on her doorstep, along with a few surprises. The dialogue is wonderful, very witty and Sally and Jim have a great chemistry here. I personally loved the setting. Testosterone Factor: Horses, Plumbing, Rodeo, Antique Car 8. The Wedding Singer (1998) Leading Guy: Adam Sandler Leading Gal: Drew Barrymore This is about 2 young folks that are both engaged, but not to each other. The problem is that each of their prospective spouses have some problems. His Bride-to-be is a flake, and her Groom-to-be is a cheater. When he gets dumped at the altar, the 2 of them find themselves together a lot, as he is helping her make her wedding plans. They, of course, begin to dream about the other, but they both try to fight it. The music here is great and there are more laughs than tears. Testosterone Factor: Bars, Fist Fight, Miami Vice clothes 7. Doc Hollywood (1991) Leading Guy: Michael J. Fox Leading Gal: Julie Warner A young doctor is heading for Californina, with dreams of becoming a rich plastic surgeon. He runs into some problems in a small town when he wrecks his car into the fence of the local Judge. His sentence for his "crime"?... to fill in as local Doctor for a few days. The locals want this new young doctor to stay around and they do everything in their power to keep him. And one of the greatest attractions is a beautiful young woman. Testosterone Factor: Fishin' Boat, Pet Pig, Fast Car, Naked Woman 6. Housesitter (1992) Leading Guy: Steve Martin Leading Gal: Goldie Hawn Here's another story of a man that's been dumped, but this one has a twist. While trying to drown his sorrows at an office party he meets a waitress with a little identity problem. When he drunkenly mentions his vacant brand new home in a nearby town, she decides to make it not-so-vacant. This means she must pretend to be his wife to the local residents, which include his parents. A lot of fun with this one, and some very pretty scenery. Testosterone Factor: Waitress with short skirt, Convertible, Dog 5. Never Been Kissed (1999) Leading Guy: Michael Vartan Leading Gal: Drew Barrymore Have you ever wanted to go back in time and fix what you consider are some of your past mistakes? This is a story of a girl that is given a chance to do almost that very thing. She won't really travel through time, but she will literally go back to high school. She is a newspaper reporter, given a special assignment. This is her chance to become one of the "popular kids". Of course, the inevitable happens and she falls in love with one of her teachers. Drew Barrymore is such a delight in this role. Testosterone Factor: Baseball, Surveillance Van with lotsa electronic stuff 4. Cousins (1989) Leading Guy: Ted Dansen Leading Gal: Isabella Rossellini Larry and Maria, cousins-by-marriage so to speak, are thrown together frequently at their many family gatherings, whether it be a wedding or a funeral. While they are trying to discover if their prospective spouses are "doing the nasty", they pretend to have their own fling. Yep, you guessed it....they fall in love. There is one particular scene that I absolutely adore in this film....the 2 of them go to a cabin for an afternoon. The chemistry between Ted and Isabella is just remarkable. Testosterone Factor: Skinny-Dipping, Sean Youngs' Legs, Motorcycle 3. It Could Happen To You (1994) Leading Guy: Nicholas Cage Leading Gal: Bridgette Fonda This is a story of a down-to-earth guy that's married to a rather vocal woman who dreams of riches and fame. They hit some big bucks with a winning lottery ticket. Crazy thing is, the hubby promised to split the winnings of the ticket with a waitress. He did this when he didn't have an extra buck to leave a tip and offered her double the tip or half the winnings of the ticket when he was to return the next day. Things get a bit crazy when the wife finds out. Some great scenes of New York here. My son wrote a more in-depth review right here, if you'd like to check it out. Testosterone Factor; Baseball (yes, again), Cops, Shoot-Out at a grocery store 2. Sleepless In Seattle (1993) Leading Guy: Tom Hanks Leading Gal: Meg Ryan A young woman is driving along and hears a mans' voice on the radio. It's one of those call-in shows and the man is talking about his deceased wife. There's something about this mans' voice that fascinates this young woman. Despite the fact that she is about to be married to someone else, this young woman can't forget the voice of the man on the radio. She will go to any length, even traveling cross-country, to discover his identity. She gets a lot of help from her best friend, Becky (Rosie O'Donnell), and to me it is the interaction between the two of them that makes this film so special. Testosterone Factor: Newspapers, baseball stadium, sailing with son 1. Blazing Saddles (1974) Leading Guy: Bart Leading Gal: Lili Von Shtupp IT'S TWUE!!! IT'S TWUE!!! Ok, ok, I'm just pulling your chain.....but I did like the campfire scene...... Testosterone Factor: All of It Truly....my Number One Pick.... 1. While You Were Sleeping (1995) Leading Guy: Bill Pullman Leading Gal: Sandra Bullock This is a wonderful fairy-tale-ish story of a young woman who daily dreams of the handsome man that passes by her every day as he boards the "L". One morning he is attacked and falls onto the rails, where she promptly rescues him and he is rushed to the hospital, where he lapses into a coma. Upon arriving there, the mans' family mistakes this young woman to be his fiance. I'm not going to go into the details of why they believe this or why she doesn't straighten out the misunderstanding herself, because that is part of the charm of the story. It just so happens that the handsome man has a equally handsome and very sexy younger brother, who finds himself falling in love with the young woman. The story is set during the Christmas season and the scenery is lovely. The dialog is very clever and the chemistry between Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock is like very few I've ever seen. This is it...the ultimate romantic comedy in my book. Testosterone Factor: Absolutely zilch, NaDa, Not a Thing...that's why it's Numero Uno on my list!!! Here are just a few more that missed my Top 10 by just a smidgeon.... You've Got Mail When Harry Met Sally Fools Rush In Grumpy Old Men Groundhog Day The Quiet Man Turner and Hooch ....Skeeter insisted I add that one... Well, I hope you've enjoyed my list and you'll check out some of these films. Although they each have the ol' "love conquers all" concept, they are unique in their own way, with the various settings, personalities and music. So grab the popcorn and the tissues and spend an afternoon escaping. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My Other Top 10 Lists: 10 Best Tear Jerkers 10 Best Moods for Movies 10 Best All Star-Studded Films 10 Best Westerns 10 Best Rock N Roll Movies 10 Best Goldie Hawn Films 8-) ~~Nedi~~ |
