No kiddin I Tech Revolutionary Vol. 2 was the best album of the year but thats the problem with combining mainstream with underground lists 2 different types of music.

Good list...missing 2 albums though (Reply to this comment)

If you've heard Immortal Technique- Revolutionary Vol. 2, I don't know how it didn't make this list. Unquestionably the best album of the year, MAYBE of the new millenium...that and the CunninLynguists album are both amazing, I strongly recommend both of them. BTW, I really respect your work, you always do a great job.

Thanks for this interesting list and everything you have done! I have a lot of respect for your opinions.
I may end up having a lot to say so feel free to just skim through...
I didn't like Defari's album quite as much as you did, though it was solid. might make my top 10.
The Last Emperor's album seemed more like a collection of (mostly dope) tracks than a cohesive piece of music. I'm a fan of the man, but don't think this is a great display of his skills.
I personally liked "Rip the Jacker" much more than any of Canibus' previous material and more than most other battle rappers that i've heard. But, I can see why you didn't put it up higher on the list (due to his 1-dimensional style)
I'm not sure if I would've put Little Brother's album 1st, but being a fellow, avid ATCQ fan, I enjoyed it thoroughly (as there are many similarities in sound between the 2 groups). The excellent production stood out the most for me.
I was especially disappointed that you did not include Louis Logic's "Sin-A-Matic" and Juggaknots' "Clear Blue Skies Re:Release" as those are probably in my top 3. I also would've maybe replaced some of your choices with akrobatik's "balance", tame one's "when rappers attack", dj js-1's "ground original", j-zone's "sick of being rich", jmt's "visions of gandhi" (more interesting than "rip the jacker" to me tho the beats are not as diverse...), immortal technique's "revolutionary vol. 2" or finally Jean Grae's "The Bootleg of the Bootleg EP" which I know is not a full length, but it is a truly incredible effort from the most talented female emcee I've ever heard.
Oh yeah, most people probably disliked or maybe even hated this one, but one of my favorite albums of the year was Busdriver and Radioinactive's "The Weather". I prefered Busdriver's solo "Temporary Forever", but this follow-up has many flashes of brilliance that are hard to ignore.
Being a big MF doom fan I thought "Vaudeville Villain" was a near-classic as well. I doubt you would agree though as most heads consider him to be overrated.
sorry for the rant.
peace.
P.S. 2003 was a down year for me in regard to (probably) my favorite artist's effort, aesop rock's "bazooka tooth".
"float", "appleseed", "daylight ep", and "labor days" are all classic in my opinion, but i just wasn't feeling "bazooka tooth" at all with the exception of a few tracks. very disappointing and almost depressing.

Yeah, heads are gonna be split 50/50 on anything with Jay-Z's name on it. I respect opinions that go either way -- I'm not really a big fan of Jigga myself. As for Bis, Rip the Jacker was slightly disappointing, but still better than the majority of simple-minded-lyric-and-wack-Triton-loop-based albums out there. I think its a step in the right direction for Canibus...

Re: respect the west (Reply to this comment)
by madtheory
The "resurgence of West Coast" means just like it sounds. For a while, the West dominated the game, then the East came back up. Then in the last few years, the West underground has REALLY been coming on strong thanks to drops from J5, Dilated, Liks, Cali Agents, and a host of others. Even being from the West, you cant deny that there was a lull in new, original left coast joints coming for a while there.

Ehh... I'm not much into Gangstarr anymore. Ownerz was good, but but Primo and Guru are getting a bit too formulaic for me. If I made a top 20, it would definitely be on it though. I havent peeped the Cunninglinguists joint yet.

Re: Represent (Reply to this comment)

Yeah, at first I wasn't sure about putting Jay here either, but what sold me was a lot of the honesty he came with this time around. If it would have been just another "ice this, Bentley that, I changed the game" album, it wouldn't have made the list.

Nice list ya got there. I have to admit while some of these people I've never heard of (I'm ashamed being a fellow hip-hop head) I have to disagree with you on 2 of them. Personally I can't stand anything Jay-Z does today and so I have to disagree with you on the Black Album. Also Rip the Jacker proved to be a dissappointing album from an almost god-like emcee. Genabis was awesome but I couldn't stick with it after that with weak lines like (it may be in quotes but I'm not quoting, I don't remember if he says this word for word, I'm paraphrasing) "Canibus can rap good but his beats is ok." But that's just my opinion. Despite it all, this is a very helpful list and will let me open my mind to some virtual unknowns to me like K-os.

No Roscoe or Louis Logic, both slept on albums but easily deserving of Top 10 spots.. but then i guess that's why we all have our own lists. Otherwise, mostly spot on, 2003 was a good year... I especially liked the placing of the Defari, that was one hot album. If I wasn't in semi-retirement I would consider doing one of these, like usual, but I can't be bothered at the mo. I'll see how it goes.
Excellent writing, mad.

Yep, couldn't ignore K-os. But I just can't get down with Bubba Sparxxx -- I just didn't hear anything that impressed me on Deliverance. An average rapper with slightly above average beats.

Yep, Dizzee is pretty tight. I didn't hear much (read: ANY) garage prior to hearing of him, so naturally Da Boy In Da Corner initially turned me off. Now its in regular rotation and I've had it for months. Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, I have been meaning to review thatn Little Brother for weeks, but I'm stacked so deep on isht I need to write, I've never even got around to it. Hopefully I can mash it out in the next few days.
Yeah, 2003 was a crazy year for Hip-Hop which is a really good thing. Hopefully all the chaos means that the status quo is finally about to change. Rap definitely needs a good upheaval.
Thanks for the comments, and I'm looking forward to reading your list!

Oh yeah.... I'm VERY Happy that im not the only person on Earth who thinks Little Bro has the best album of the year.
Cheers to 2004...

Good sh*t. Of course, I think it's been understood that you and I have pretty dissimilar tastes in Hip-Hop that's a tribute to the diversity of the genre. 2003 was a pretty good year.
For the comment you left on my 2003 recap ---> Defari really sucks.
Where's J-Zone's $ick of Bein' Rich? Thought that'd be here for sure.
And I think 2004 should be a good year though Q1 isn't looking all that sweet. But we have full-lengths from MadVillain, The Roots (hopefully), MF Doom, Murs (all produced by 9th Wonder), Common, Kanye West, Dialated Peoples, Jurassic 5, Gift of Gab, O.C., Copywrite, RJD2, Ghostface Killah, Talib Kweli, and I'm sure many more unconfirmed.
Anyhow, good stuff.

I love Dizzee! It's a shame, now he's blown up and is working with Basement Jaxx etc, he's getting a LOT of hate from the garage underground, simply for succeeding. *Rolls eyes*. So British.

For including Escape From Alcatraz.. easily one of the more slept on releases this year, its in my list as well. I'm just adding some finishing touches to my top 20 list, it should be done tomorrow.
