As I write this, I am trying to remember what I did for searches before my wife downloaded the Google toolbar, but it really escapes me. I have a vague memory of using Netscape search, but that was so looong ago.
I am impressed with the speed that Google finds websites relative to the search terms I enter. Just last night, I was looking for some info on upgrading my motherboard. I entered the model number + the word "motherboard, and got back 170 related sites. Many of those sites were helpful in my quest, with pictures of the board and replacement parts. I even got a direct link to the manufacturer now know it is possible to add a USB port to my computer!
Tha "Safesearch" Option is available to those who wish to avoid adult content in their results. Not only are keywords and phrases filtered, but also URL's and Open Directory categories. For those with children in their home, this is a welcome addition. Even with their "advanced proprietary technology", they also accept user suggestions for inclusion in the blocked sites.
Currently, they provide translation into 60 different languages (even Elmer Fudd, Hacker and Pig Latin!). I am not multi-lingual, and the opportunity to view a foreign language site is a real treat for me.
Even with those features, the one I am most enthused about is the toolbar that is available for Internet Explorer 5+. It makes using Google Search so much easier to use. There is a window that you type in the words to search for, and then either click the "Search Web" button, or simply press "enter", and the results are quickly displayed in your browser window. Along with the "Search Web" button, there is also a "Search Site" button to find those terms on the page you are viewing. Also included are Page Rank, information about the current page, and highlighting of search words. These, as well as being able to move up to a parent directory, are right on the toolbar for easy access.
But, the toolbar wouldn't be complete without a control menu, and that is where you can really personalize Google Search. You can choose your preferences, clear search history, conduct an advanced search, find help, and even uninstall the Google toolbar (like I would ever WANT to do that!!).
Google has recently added an image search. Just like a regular search, the more details you give, the better chance you will find what you are looking for.
I am still in the habit of giving few details when I search, because most search engines have so few pages indexed that I would need to wade through pages of results for what I wanted. After reading a couple of other reviews, I realize that Google is a "step-up" from the others, and being more specific is not only possible, but labor-saving as well.
