The Giddy Doc's Favorite 10 Romance MoviesOct 25 '04 (Updated Jun 27 '06) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line The Bottom Line is not allowed to head for the hills... Ahhh the romance movie... much maligned and scorned by some, adored by others. I think it all really depends on your current perspective when you watch them whether you will like them or not. I've noticed a major change in my own perspective of late... I can't seem to get enough of the things! So, as usual, here is my current top 10 favorites, which is subject to change without notice... cuz, like, I'm a girrrrl. In no particular order: What Dreams May Come ~ From birth, we women dream of the man who will go that extra mile for us. The man who will love us and protect us and not let any obstacle get in the way. We want a knight in shining armor to wisk us away. Ok most females want this... (let's just discount the Gloria Steinham contingent right off the bat.) This movie shows a man willing to go to the ends of the Earth... and beyond.. for the love of his life. Robin Williams, Annabella Sciorra, Cuba Gooding, JR. Time's not on my watch anymore. Time does not exist here. And wherever it went, it's not going to make me need Annie any less. Camelot ~ What could possibly be more romantic than this tale of King Arthur, Guenivere, and Lancelot? Sure sure there's betrayal and all that rot, but still... it just makes one's heart all a flutter. Just very well done and very fun. Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave, and Franco Nero. In short, there's simply not a more congenial spot for happily ever aftering than here in Camelot The Princess Bride ~ Seems we have this young lad by name of Westley who is ever so maaaadly in love with some wench name of Buttercup. Now, bein' he's a lowly farm hand and all, our young scalawag doesn't think himself worthy of Buttercup and goes off to seek his fortune (and a really cool black eye patch). One of the funniest yet romantic movies ever, with an all star cast. As you wish You've Got Mail ~ Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fall in love via the Internet. Very predictable romantic comedy, but it made me cry, and it hit home with me. Hanks and Ryan have amazing chemistry in this. Hey, how about... oh, how about some coffee, or drinks, or dinner, or a movie... for as long as we both shall live? Honeymoon in Vegas ~ Ok now while the so called hero causes all the problems here by dragging his feet to the altar, he does come to his senses and then jumps through all kinds of impossible hoops to win his gal back. Besides, it stars Nicolas Cage. Hubba hubba. People get married and then they do the most hideous, unbelievable things to each other. Meet Joe Black ~ What you have here is a story about DEATH. Not about dying per se, but about DEATH himself. Ya see, DEATH wants to know what it means to experience life. He's supposed to be claiming a corporate big wig, but decides to make a deal instead. If Bill will show DEATH the ropes to living, then DEATH will allow Bill to live a bit longer. Along the way, DEATH falls in love with Bill's daughter.. Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, and Claire Forlani. When I introduce you, and I tell them who you are, I don't think anyone will stay for dinner. A Knight's Tale ~ Ok just hear me out on this one... the romance between William and Joselyn is torrid, complicated, and passionate. William's love is tested to the max here. Yeah she does ask too much of him, but it's so damn romantic to watch him comply, and comical too. Heath Ledger and Shannon Sossamon. William : I can't explain it. She makes me feel like a poet. Roland : Well you may feel like a poet, but you sound like an idiot. Shakespeare in Love ~ Joseph Fiennes plays a very sexy William Shakespeare in this one. His life is falling apart and he's under the gun when he of course falls in love, which inspires him to write Romeo & Juliet. Lots of steaminess here. I love you, Will, beyond poetry. Don Juan Demarco ~ Don Juan (Depp) is a confused lad, we think. He's about to kill himself because he's lost his lady love.. but he needs to die honorably so he awaits the arrival of an old nemesis. Dr. Jack Mickler (Brando) shows up and plays the role, deftly talking Don Juan down and promptly institutionalizing him. Our charismatic hero rapidly starts turning the place on it's ear and wraps his shrink (Brando) pretty much around his finger. Nobody, including us, knows what to believe... And that's the beauty of it all. Every true lover knows that the moment of greatest satisfaction comes when ecstasy is long over and he beholds before him the flower that has blossomed beneath his touch City of Angels ~ Nicolas Cage is an angel who falls in love with a mortal woman, Meg Ryan (and who wouldn't?). This one made me cry soooo much and really I'm not all that prone to tears normally. Just very well done all the way around, and the chemistry is awesome. I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it. An Eleventh Bonus!!!!! Still Breathing ~ Brendan Fraser is a man (boy is he ever!) who was born into a fairly strange family down in San Antonio. They're a very lovable bunch, but it seems the men in the ol' family tree have the ability to 'see' the woman they will spend the rest of their lives with... via dreams. It's up to them to then track 'er down and drag 'er on home with them. heh. Bloody brilliant film by one-trick-pony James F. Robinson, also starring Lou Rawls, Joanna Going, and Celeste Holm. There are two things I always wanted to believe in but didn't dare. One is that there was one man, somewhere, who was made just for me. The other is that I just might deserve him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Also Rans Notting Hill It Could Happen To You First Knight Peggy Sue Got Married Message in a Bottle Runaway Bride Intolerable Cruelty While You Were Sleeping The Truth About Cats and Dogs Sweet November As Good as it Gets Sabrina (both versions) About a Boy Sleepless in Seattle Ghost |
