Best movies of 2003 - Hobbits, Foxes and Clownfish AboundJan 27 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line is vertical and crosses my bottom... 2003 has come and gone and am was very pleased to say that it has finally been a good year for movies after over a 5 year drought. I have put together a top 10 list of the movies I have seen and even though there might be a few movies which I havent seen that could be on the list, this list only pertains to the movies I watched. So without further ado, here it is, the very best of 2003! 10. 28 Days Later - This British Horror import was surprisingly good. The story about a virus that infects people with rage and causes them to kill everyone around them is a eery and creepy vision of what might happen if you were one of the survivors and had to find every possible means to continue to survive. Fast moving zombies give the viewer an adrenaline rush before something happens and the washed out documentary style cinematography makes it look real. A very entertaining and frightening at times, read my full review of 28 Days Later my #10 for the year. 9. Big Fish - Another surprisingly good movie, not being one of Tim Burtons fans I didnt expect to enjoy this as much as I did, but this is a feel good fantasy tale about a man and his unbelievable journey through life as he tries to convey to his skeptical son that everything he told him actually happened. Great acting and wonderful, vivid shots accompany the interesting and metaphorical storyline. A standout performance for Albert Finney. My #9 for the year. 8. The Italian Job - My fox reference in the headline is geared towards Charlize Theron in The Italian Job, hubba hubba is she a sight for sore Eyes. A very entertaining heist flick about a group of robbers that pull off a big heist just to have one of them kill the man in charge and flee with the stash, the rest of the movie deals with the rest of the gang tracking him down and bringing him to justice. An all star cast including Theron, Mark Whalberg, Donald Sutherland and Ed Norton highlight the story, entertaining car chase sequences in Mini Coopers and the usual high tech play make this a rewarding and fun motion picture. Read my full review of The Italian Job My #8 for the year. 7. Kill Bill - Volume 1 - Quentin Tarantino is at it again with this rock em sock em chop suey kong fuey action flick that is a takeoff of the bad kong fu movies of the 70s. Uma Thurman plays a woman beaten and left for dead by Bill and his gang and her quest for revenge leads her to every member of the gang. A great soundtrack, wonderfully choreographed and filmed fight sequences, a unique storyline transition from present to past and vice versa and very violent, but in a comical sort of way, Tarantino does it again, cant wait for Volume 2. My #7 movie of the year. 6. Matchstick Men - Ridley Scotts entertaining tale of an obsessive compulsive con artist who finds out he has a daughter, together they try to pull off the ultimate con just to find out a shocking secret. A terrificly acted, well scripted film showcasing Nicholas Cage in one of his finest roles, for more please read my review of Matchstick Men. My #6 movie of the year. 5. Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines - The governator, errr Terminator is back for a third installment without James Cameron at the helm, I had low expectations for this one, yet again I was surprised, top notch action sequences, nicely written plot and of course my second fox of the review, the terminatrix Christanna Loken, triple hubba! For more please read my Terminator 3 review. My # 5 movie of the year. 4. A Mighty Wind - I am one of the biggest Christopher Guest fans, from his days of Spinal Tap, to Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, here is a tale about a folk singing live fundraiser and all the characters that were big stars of yesteryear and the present performing to our pleasure. Entertaining folk music that yet again was actually performed by the actors, hilarious mockumentary in the typical Guest style, you cant leave the theater without chuckling. My #4 movie of the year. 3. Finding Nemo - Pixar has done it again, the creators of Toy Story, A Bugs Life and Monster, Inc. have given us a wonderful, colorful animated tale about a clownfish who loses his son and finds adventure while attempting to find him. Very funny, heartwarming, beautifully animated story that ranks up there with Pixars best. For a more detailed review, please read my take on Finding Nemo, my #3 movie of the year. 2. Mystic River - Clint Eastwoods haunting, riveting tale about 3 friends and the path they took into adulthood. One of the friends is traumatized by an event that took place in his childhood, one is a police officer and one is a criminal whose daughter is viciously murdered. Incredible performances throughout, primarily Sean Penn as the criminal, many twists and turns keep you guessing who committed the crime. This movie will have you drawn in from beginning to end. My #2 movie of the year. 1. Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King - Not too surprising, the final installment of the best trilogy since Indiana Jones, Peter Jackson directs this concluding chapter of the tale, a very satisfying cinematic feat, full of greatness across the board, acting, editing, cinematography, music, plot, script, Art sets and costumes, hands down the best picture of the year, quite easily at that. Hats off to Jackson, my #1 of the year, Please read my full review of LOTR - ROTK Hope you enjoyed this list, please stop by and check out some of my other lists: The Top 10....Best Picture Snubs Ever The Top 10 Oscar Winning Movies The Top 10.....New Sequels You should avoid The Top 10.....Most Anticipated Sequels The top 10.....Best Spoofs ever and please find the time to join my current Write-Off Top 10 W/O Peace out People! |
