| aubmom's Full Review: Ocean's Thirteen |
I sometimes hate sequels because they are never as good as the original movie. Ocean's 13 proved me wrong in one department. The movie and plot was as good as the first. What was missing was a real romance in the film. The movie was loaded with actors you love to see and I laughed out loud a few times. You can't relax too much in movie or you may get lost. But it was fun watching to see if you could stay ahead of the movie. The pace is quick and the plot is complex. Seeing the first movie helped me understand this movie. If you haven't seen the first two you may be lost. I had to see the Ocean's 11 twice to get it.
Movie plot
Willy Bank (Al Pacino) double crosses Danny Ocean's (George Clooney) friend and mentor Reuben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould )in a casino/hotel deal in Las Vegas. Reuben looses his faith and money and has a heart attack that puts him in critical condition.
Danny calls in the gang to help give support to Reuben and figure out how to help him. He goes to Willy Banks and gives him a second chance to make it up to Reuben. Banks declines and Danny is ready to get revenge. Some of of the group would like to kill him, but the best revenge is to make him suffer where he hurt: the money the casino makes and an 5-diamond hotel reward that Banks tends to win for every hotel he opens. They plan for Banks to lose 500 million on opening night which would make him lose the casino. They also plan to make sure he doesn't get the 5-star diamond hotel reward. The plan includes a fake earthquake, plenty of rig games and having the hotel reviewer have a "bad" visit.
The payoff is not the money but personal revenge. They are willing to let unknowns win the money. As the plan is being put into action, they need to bring in Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) to help financially. This brings in another dynamic in the movie. The movie has a main plot with others plots intertwined There is a lady (Ellen Barkin) in the film. It was hard for me to totally understand her role in the film but to wear tight dresses and stumble over men.
The Cast
This movie was filled with well known actors which made it fun to watch.
Casey Affleck - Virgil Malloy
Ellen Barkin - Abigail Sponder
Scott Caan - Turk Malloy
Don Cheadle - Basher Tarr
George Clooney - Danny Ocean
Matt Damon - Linus Caldwell
Andy Garcia - Terry Benedict
Elliot Gould - Reuben Tishkoff
Eddie Izzard - Roman Nagel
Eddie Jemison - Livingston Dell
Bernie Mac - Frank Catton
Al Pacino - Willie Bank
David Paymer - The V.U.P.
Brad Pitt - Rusty Ryan
Shaobo Qin - Yen
Carl Reiner - Saul Bloom
Some of my favorite scenes were with Basher (Don Cheadle). You see his crazy side and his soft side. Several of the characters you learned more about beyond there cleverness and the con side of them. The scenes are mostly in Las Vegas, but there are a few scenes from Mexico where the Malloy brothers are trying to do some good at a factory that make dice.
Overall
Ocean's Thirteen is good movie to go see. It is quick, complex and makes you smile. It gives you a few hours of walking on the "cool" side of con men. You see plenty of actors, costumes and some one liners. I did miss the chemistry of Clooney and Julia Roberts. Even without romance, a girl will enjoy the 2 hours of seeing all these actors. Ocean's Thirteen is better than 12 but not quiet as good as 11. If you liked Ocean's 11, you will like 13.
