The Bottom Line Check these movies out. They all deserve an audience. And if anyone has a copy of The Manitou, please email me at mightysnoro@hotmail.com. I want, I want, I want!!!
After reading many of these lists I decided to put together my own list of lesser seen horror movies. Every person who is a fan of this genre knows about The Shining, The Silence Of The Lambs, The Omen, etc.................. I'm going to concentrate on some other films besides the super-popular ones that sometimes slip under the radar. In not necessarily the correct order: 1. Cube This Canadian-made film is quite possibly my favourite sci-fi/horror movie of all time. 6 people wake up inside a cube-shaped construction made of smaller, interconnected cube rooms. They have no food, water or clue why they have been trapped there. They have one agenda: Escape before they die of starvation. Some rooms are booby-trapped, and their only hope of figuring out which ones are is to work together which becomes increasingly difficult as hunger and thirst help paranoia set in. Track down a copy of this pronto! 2. The Manitou The only movie that ever made me move down the couch closer to my father. Well, I was only about 8 or 9 but this movie scared the cr*p out of me more than any other before or since. It deals with a woman (sorry I can't remember any names) who develops a lump on her upper back which turns out to be a fetus. After failed attempts at removal, she turns to an Indian witch doctor who tells her that it is the spirit of a long dead Indian holy (evil) man. The birth scene is one of the coolest lower budget horror scenes that I have ever seen. Almost impossible to locate a copy. 3. Donnie Darko Watching the previews of this can be misleading. This is an excellent psychological horror movie about a teenager who is slowly going insane. Typer's cramp is preventing me from giving away more. Reviews are going to be shorter from now on. Anyway, pick this one up if only to see Patrick Swayze as a motivational speaker with a dark secret. 4. Hellraiser 6: Hellseeker While not as good as #'s 1 and 2, this installment is WORLDS better than the rest. More of a psychological thriller with splatterings of gore to remind you that it is a Hellraiser movie. Reminds me of The Sixth Sense in that at the end of the movie you finally go "Ohhhh, now I get it!". Very worth buying. 5. Pumpkinhead I've always liked Lance Henrikson, and this cult classic is my favourite of his. Vengeance is the theme of this one as a father finds his young son dead (accidentally) at the hands (or motorcycles) of some vacationing teenagers. Rather than taking the law into his own hands, he goes to a witch to have a curse put on them. The price, however, turns out to be a bit too high in the end. One of my must-gets on DVD. 6. Killer Klowns From Outer Space File this one under "Return Of The Living Dead, Part 2" section of your collection. B-rated comedy/horror at it's best. If you get the DVD, you'll be extra impressed at the effects for how cheaply they were done. Already got me a copy on DVD. Amazing clown costumes. Not my particular deep-down fear but one of my faves, nevertheless. 7. Wishmaster This one features a great, mostly unknown actor by the name of Andrew Divoff. This guy is creepy without a lot of makeup! Although the movie is fairly formula (pick a bad guy, give him a beautiful female nemesis and an evil agenda and let her find a way to thwart him), this is a very well done movie. Divoff has great screen presence, and in my opinion could be a big money star with the right exposure. Horror buffs will want this one for cameos by some of the biggest names in horror characters: Tony Todd (The Candyman), Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) and Kane Hodder (Jason). With a cast like that, how could you go wrong? 8. Frailty This one features Bill Paxton not only starring as lead male, but also is his directorial debut. Billed as a "Southern Gothic Horror" I took a chance on it, picking up the DVD used at Blockbuster. What I discovered was a very hard to pigeonhole film. Good and evil are shades of grey in this instead of black and white. At least to me they are. Is it wrong to identify with the supposed bad guy? Matthew McConaughey delivers a strong performance as well, bringing the "hunk" factor to this movie to hopefully get women to watch it. The ending will have you wondering which side is really the good and which is the bad. 9. Lost Souls Winona Ryder and Ben Chaplin star in this Satan-becomes-flesh tale as old as time. The thing that really gets me about this movie is the atmosphere. Everything appears to be filtered to be shades of brown. It makes for a very dark, moody film. People criticise this movie for it's ending, but I wasn't left wanting. Except for maybe a longer director's cut. 10. Carnivale Not a movie, but an HBO series that plays like a 12 hour movie. Definitely my favourite current TV show blending history, religion, mysticism and real life struggles together into the moodiest, bleakest thing that has ever slithered into my head. I can't say enough good things about this series. It follows the paths of two people who never meet (at least not yet), but whose lives are invariably interconnected. Brother Justin Crowe (Clancy Brown from Highlander and The Shawshank Redemption) is a Californian preacher determined to minister to poor migrant workers, much to the disapproval of his well to-do congregation. Nick Stahl (Terminator 3) is Ben Hawkins, a chain gang escapee who gets picked up by a travelling freak show carnival run by a mysterious power known only as "management". One is a child of light, one a child of dark. Just when you think that you are understanding which is which, the show throws you a curve ball. Please, I beg of you, find copies of this show somewhere and watch them. You won't be sorry. Honorable mention to Cat's Eye, The Ring (too mainstream to make the list), American Psycho (ditto), Final Destination 1 & 2 (ditto), Cube 2: Hypercube, Warlock Non-horror faves: Of Mice And Men (1992), Equilibrium, UHF (Weird Al's masterpiece), Spaceballs, Clerks, Sling Blade, U-Turn, The Vanishing, Mask (the Cher movie), The Rutles (Beatles mock-umentary pre-Spinal Tap featuring Eric Idle) |
