Merkin not Mervin (Reply to this comment)
by stkrzd
The US President in Dr Strangelove is named Merkin Muffley, not Mervin. Look up the word 'merkin,' that's one more funny little joke in that dark film.

I would have to add the Pink Panther movies with Sellers to my best comedy list.

I loved this list! I saw "The Navigator" years ago while in college and thought it one of the funniest films I'd ever seen. You have a few films listed that I have not seen but I'll try to remedy that. Thanks for the great work.

Wow, you write some of the most in-depth reviews on Epinions. Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming, especially if one is a "beginner," but keep up the great work!

I haven't seen all the films on your list, but the ones I have seen are definitely some of the best comedies. I'll have to check out some of the others. Nice job!

Howard,

I love most of the films on your list. I haven't seen your # 3 and # 5 picks, but I'll have to check them out. I first saw "Young Frankenstein" at a midnight showing at a sci-fi convention in 1976 --- I nearly fell out of my fold-up chair (my father and my son are also lovers of that film; my dad educated me well on the great comedians growing up and his favorite comedy is "Arsenic and Old Lace").

Some of my favorites are here also... (Reply to this comment)

But you do list a few that I must admit I have yet to see. I'll have to keep my eyes open... your review makes me all the more curious on some of these older titles. Thanks for the heads-up, excellent job as always.

An outstanding list made all the more so... (Reply to this comment)

..by the difficulty in narrowing down the selections. Great to see the incredible Alkec Guinness vehicle Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Man from Rio on there, especially the latter which is so little known in the US. Dr. Strangelove has to be included, of course, as you did, as does Young Frankenstein. All worthy, Howard.

I guess I would have tried to make sure The Producers got on there somehow, but then, how many Mel brooks films can one pick? And I've always been partial to Spinal Tap as the paragon of the mock-umentary genre, and the ultimate slap at our generation's rock culture.

Bravo.

Some Like It Hot is Riotous. Before its time really!

Beverly Hills Cop is the ultimate rogue cop movie and the quintesential Eddie Murphy film.

If only all Eddie's efforts were this funny.

All of these are jewels.

As always, very nice review of each movie and nice choice of movies to review.

I have not seen King Of Hearts so maybe I'll get this out of the library today since I'm here already.

My best,

I really enjoyed reading this piece and was especially intrigued with your observations on Dr. Strangelove.

Have you ever seen Weekend at Bernie's? It's one of my favorites--wall to wall laughs in a pretty grisly setting.

Regards,

Mike

This is definitely a personal and eclectic list! You really surprise me with your range of likes, but it's you. Although you don't mention a beautifully-photographed artsy comedy...:-)

Excellent Choices :) (Reply to this comment)

Great choices Howard. The only one that I would have a minor quibble with is Sleeper. I must say that I far preferred Woody Allen's Take the Money and Run to it.

Now I think I have to get working on my list sometime, Gary.

Sleeper and Dr Strangelove are 3 of the greatest movies ever made in my humble opinion..:) Funny thing, I was going to do another write-off that asked for a movie list and those were going to be on mine...oh and one more, with Peter Sellers that I cant think of the name, maybe you know it..he plays quite a few parts in the movie about a small European country...It's driving me crazy trying to remember the movie..one of the parts he plays is a queen...

Oh well... enjoyed reading this as I always do and in response to your comment on my latest review...Kentucky sounds every bit as interesting as South Florida, only colder...LOL

I have only seem about 1/2 of the films you listed. My husband has been subjecting me to French humor in the form of Louis de Funes for the last few months so it will be nice to show him a bit of American style.
Even though it is a cartoon...Shrek really made me laugh with it's different outtake on "fairy tales". And I'm glad you have "Princess Bride" listed!

I thought it was very funny decades ago and was relieved that I still thought it was funny when I saw it again a year or so ago.

But "Princess Bride"???

My first movie I ever saw was a Marx Brothers that my older sister and brother took me to. I remember laughing so hard and could not stop, tear rolled down my cheeks and almost wet my pants. You see my father thought all movies were sinful and I discovered they were not and so funny.

About Clark Gable and no undershirt, you see we were more modest back in those days. Now everything is shown in all it's glory.

Thanks for the comment on Women, I wasn't as blown away as with Wise Women, but it had an interesting group of Women. All beautifuly photographed.

I'm especially glad you mentioned King of Hearts. I haven't thought of this film in quite some time, but I used to watch it annually. Just love it.
