Re: I missed the halftime show... (Reply to this comment)
by CyndiA
Hi Pat--I did enjoy the game even if the Panthers lost. It was nice to see a close contest. It was pretty obvious that the Patriots were going to take it at the end . . . but you never know. The kicker didn't nail it on the 2 other trys. I even have to say that I'm glad he did get the field goal. I can only imagine how much work he puts in to get a couple of seconds on the field to score. Talk about major stress.
I hope that the game is about the game in a few months and not about Janet, but I figure that her flash will be the highlight. It's really sad that a flash of flesh is that big a deal in this country.

Hi Deborah--Tks for stopping by. A boob does not stop this household cold, but it sure does put a kink in the aftergame talk. The show should be an extra and not the center stage. Can you imagine how many folks would almost kill to get to perform at halftime at the SB? Jackson and Timberlake tried to hijack the game and make it about how far a musician can go. They need to push that somewhere else. Footnotes don't need to overshadow the real action. But, that's what they did. The sad part is that they are both talented and don't need to roll in the dirt to be noticed.

I missed the halftime show... (Reply to this comment)
by pmills1210
as I was busy fixing my supper. The halftime shows never hold my interest. The networks, though, made sure nobody missed this "highlight." The incident has upset some, and I understand to some extent. I just wish they'd make a halftime show that would hold my interest as much as the game did. This "wardrobe malfunction" couldn't have happened at a worse time - especially for the children who were watching.
Fortunately, the game was a little more exciting than the halftime incident. The Panthers made their biggest mistake at precisely the wrong time. I was happy for the Patriots because their safeties, Rodney Harrison and Eugene Wilson, are from my neck of the woods. I certainly hope that an incident like the one with Jackson and Timberlake won't garner so much attention in the future. Thanks for sharing!
Sincerely, Pat

I agree with Phil.........I really thought that the most harmful part of this incident was the act of ripping clothing off of a woman by Justin. I missed the whole thing as I was busy dancing to Janet's song, alone, in my kitchen! Though I wasn't shocked about Janet's boob, or even offended, I do feel it was in poor taste. Good for you for writing this great essay!
My best,
Deborah~

Thank you Melinda--This has been a rough day, but your nice comment and a teacher at the school telling me that he bet it was hard to be a single mom and that (after having my second child in class) wanted me to know that I had sure done something right in raising the kids took the edge off any other stuff. Really, if I raise good kids who care about other people and are happy, then I would say my life has been a success. Being a parent is the hardest job in the whole world. I think that so many parents try so hard and don't catch some luck at places in time. I am thankful that my kids are doing well and pray that they will continue to do well. I will love them no matter what though, because that's what it means to be a parent.

Hi Melinda--Tks for your support. Caleb has been really disappointed that the game became so second fiddle. But, he loves his new shirt, and he is still having a lot of fun with his football cards. I'm so glad that he does not see his cards as collectables. He is a kid, and I'm glad he can just play with those cards. He likes to put them all over the living room floor and see which players have changed teams and such. He even looks to see the birthdays and the home towns and such. The media focus disappointed him, but he is still gung-ho Panthers and also Atlanta Braves on baseball. He really enjoys his cards and any shirts and such that he gets.

I often find that "pushing the envelope" means not having much worth showing and simply going for the shock factor. With stuff like Jerry Springer on TV, it's mostly "seen it before" anyway. I feel the same way about a lot of the special effects on movies. If they really had a good story, they wouldn't need all those bells and whistles.

Hum . . . 100 sets before age 13. Are you a peeping tom?
I tried beating my kid every time he turned on a football game, but that didn't work. I sure hope he doesn't grow up to be a bum wearing a wife beater t-shirt and belching on the couch.

I'm not thrilled with the boob shot and glad that my boys missed it. But what bothered me more was male dancers wearing female clothes and Kid Rock wearing the American flag as a shirt. Then there were the lyrics that the various performers were singing which were pretty vulgar and offensive.
Bad show all around.

Well... (Reply to this comment)

I respect your right to have your own opinion. However, I can think of about five things right off the top of my head for kids to be doing (other than watching football)that are more entertaining and better for the mind and body.
1 - Sleeping
2 - Reading (What a concept!)
3 - Daydreaming
4 - Getting some exercise
5 - Playing hide and seek
These are the things I did when I was a kid. I never watched football. I never cared for it. I still don't. Thus, whilst everyone was watching the big game, focusing all of that brainpower on a small pigskin ball, and complaining about Janet's boob, I was relaxing and actually thinking to myself what a wonderful world this might be if people ever got their priorities straight.
This is not really intended to be a personal insult. Lots of people watched the game and I'm sure their kids did to. As you said, I don't think they saw anything that will traumatize them for life.
I've lost track of how many boobs I've seen over the years. Although they're always visually appealing to us males, they really start to lose their shock value after you've seen maybe three sets of them. I'd seen probably a hundred sets of them by the time I was 13.....and I wasn't even a football fan.

It's been a while since I clicked on your profile page. Er, um, the truckstop gal in question was black. How do I know you're not one of that gang of highly intelligent felines that have taken over Epinions {like the one in my profile pic *snicker* } as a stepping stone to taking over the world?
Hmm, now that you mention it, cats are rather quiet in nature and stealthy when they want to be.
Who exactly am I talking to here? The human or the cat?

Hi Patti,
I kind of swung to the right on this one, because it really should be OK to have a problem with boobs in prime time or to think that's just fine. It seemed that the "bring it on" voices were overpowering at our EP space.
Really, I did want to give voice to the really little people like Caleb. He has no political agenda. He's just ticked that it's all about the boob and not the game after he got all pumped up to see some football with HIS team on tap.
One good thing . . . they had a stand today in town with some deep cuts on Panther stuff (since they lost I guess). I got him a t-shirt for $9.99. So, he's a happy kid with his new shirt. He doesn't care that they lost. He was glad they got there. He'll wear his shirt whether they are on top or not. I think that's what it's all about--a kid who is thrilled with a cheap t-shirt just because it's his team and he's proud.
Boobs don't rock our world.
And, I enjoy your EP writings!

I am so on the fence with this one (Reply to this comment)
by AliventiAsylum
On one hand, I think the whole controversy is stupid. I agree with your son - it was an awesome game and that's what they should be talking about. I don't get what the big deal is - it's a boob. Some men have bigger and better ones than her and they go shirtless all the time. And now they're investigating? Get upset that people are sleeping on the street in freezing weather - make a fuss that so many people in this country have no health insurance - demand an investigation into all of the lies about the WMD in Iraq! Spending taxpayer dollars on figuring out what happened that a boob was shown on television seems utterly ridiculous.
Like Stephen, I was boycotting the CBS half-time show and didn't see it firsthand. Saw the stills on the Drudge site and the "incident" with a blotted out boob many times since then. Like you, I don't think what they did was right as people do have the right to choose not to have themselves and their family exposed to it should they choose.
But quite honestly, I think this country needs to gain some perspective. I look at the big deal being made about this and I'm more bothered by the reaction to the incident than the incident itself.

Ah, Superbowl Mammaries (Reply to this comment)
by oldcomixfan
I think the whole thing is rather lame compared to my Superbowl XXX experience.
I was driving a truck back then, and pulled into a seedy truck stop in N. Little Rock.
I adopted a stray puppy that had been dumped there, shared part of my Taco Bell dinner with it, and we watched the Superbowl game on T.V. in my truck.
We were interrupted by a sistah lot lizard pounding on the door, whose sales pitch involved silently lifting her shirt and giving us a double-gander of her round, firm torpedoes..
"Hey! Those are nice!" I said. I grabbed the cute little puppy, held it up for her to see, and asked if she wanted a puppy. "Gee, isn't he cute?"
She gave me a weird look , lowered her shirt, scampered off, and came back later that night with her brood of flesh-peddling, drug-addicted, nocturnal, sorority of reptiles-of-the-night every half hour on the half hour and pounded on my sleeper berth and rocked it so I couldn't sleep.
Just before the crack of dawn I followed her as she plied her trade, and popped her in the azz with my slingshot loaded up with a propellor bearing. WHAP! SCREECH! scamper...
Now THAT'S what I call a Superbowl mammary!

Well Steve--If you liked that D first half, I will surely have to hook you up to talk with Caleb. I almost nodded off. Now, I know that takes great skill to keep others from scoring. But, it's not something that will catch my interest and keep me on the edge of my seat. I was an "E" kind of person before we had entertainment packaged. Luckily, I can entertain the heck out of myself (-: Set me out in the middle of the field, and I can find something to watch and ponder about. Football. I never did catch the groove but can sit still long enough to watch the SP (sort of). As I watched, I also cooked, cleaned a bit, and I popped on and off the computer (which I do find very entertaining).

the good stuff (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray
I was boycotting the halftime show because of CBS's refusal of the moveon ad. The ads they did run were the worst in memory.
I saw all the good stuff: the defensive game for the first 25 minutes and the third quarter, the aerial circus at the ends of both halves. An exciting football game to offset the failed humor of most of the ads and the halftime nonsense rather than the often boring, lopsided football enlivened by some witty commercials...

Re: I have to agree with your statement of.......... (Reply to this comment)

Hi Phil--Great point. That's really the only thing my boys really need to know. It's not right for guys to rip off girls shirts. Well, these boys know better than that. They were brought up to respect others--females and males.
Hum. Another point to address is the lying. If Janet and Justin do stuff like that, they ought to forget all that song and dance about wardrobe malfunctions. They probably got that slick talk idea from Clinton. I really hate when folks do that. When I do somthing, I own up and no excuses.
Some of the performers really were good. I missed the national anthem. I was heating up the shoulder I think. But, I did catch Willy and Aerosmith. Now, those boys are rough and rowdy, but they don't get naked at the Super Bowl. They sang. Good for them!

Hi Wendy--Tks for telling me about the Jason typo. I know I corrected one of those. I'll look again and see if I have any others. When I read it myself, I see Justin. I'm sure glad we have spell check now, and I wish it corrected things like Jason/Justin.
If that's the worst things the boys ever see, they will be lucky. Actually, they did miss that. But, I don't think they would have cared much if they had seen that footage. They are younger guys, and I've never made a big deal about bodies. I'm pretty certain they would have thought it was stupid if they had been glued to the halftime show.

Hi Tom--Bummer on the finish )-: We were crossing our fingers here. It's not that often that we have some big game with our team in the running. Caleb was really disappointed, but he felt good that the Panthers played really well. He could tell you every play I think and what might of worked and changed that final score. In fact, he sure wishes someone wanted to talk about the game.
The first half was very slow, but I enjoyed that second half a lot. We were all on the edges of the seats right up to those last couple of seconds. Miss it! Miss it! Miss it! Well, I know a lot of people were hoping just as hard for that ball to go through, and I'm sure the kicker was thankful that he nailed that last one.
The other reviews were really good, and I've enjoyed hearing the various views on the Janet thing. It really is and should be a dumb footnote on the game.

Hi David,
Actaully, I'd say that comments on the reviews were what kicked off my decision to give "voice" to folks who did find it problematic that a singer decides to drop her shirt during the big game.
Your review was well thought out and interesting. I read it shortly after it went up and then clicked back over and read it again. I often read pieces a few times when I like the style and the ideas offered up.
So, yes . . . I'm glad that you wrote your piece and that trust wrote his piece.
I hope my piece provided a little balance and another take on the boob espisode.
Though I'm very "small town," I've lived a lot of places including Japan and Greece. In Greece, the beaches were topless. No problem. Now, I wore a top. First, I like support esp when running and second I don't like to get sunburned where the sun has not been shining much. You'll find that I'm very pragmatic. But, it wasn't a problem. In fact, I was thankful that the custom in Greece is to strip the kids down and water them off. Here, you take them home with all that sand in their trunks. Ugh!
I'm not that big on football either. The only game I watched all season was the Super Bowl. Generally I'd rather read a good book or take a bubble bath. But, I know that lots of folks love football and that lots of folks don't want naked breasts on during the game.

LOL John--You don't know me very well. I do have a wicked sense of humor, so my piece spoofs off yours in the other direction. Yep. I read your article and agreed with a lot of your points and laughed at the way you played with words. I don't know if I rated or not, becasue geez I don't know how essays can be judged on a helpful scale. I often read and don't rate in WC. So, I would say that your piece was very well written, very funny, very creative, very interesting. Very helpful? Hum. I still don't see how that fits on these pieces (including mine).
You must not have a kid (-: Cause, boy howdy, what you typed up is NOT what you'd tell a kid. They would fall asleep during that. So, I got another smile only on the audience angle mentioned. I know what the issues are, but it really is hard to get all that across to a kid. I tell them much of what you're saying but in kid friendly language.
You did catch me on a draft pub. I may go back and edit and tighten. This was off the cuff so yep . . . I know it's loose. That's what I like about this space (in part). I can let er rip from time to time.
I'm glad you did stop by here. I'll have to get over and check out more of your work. I know I've read some of your reviews and the essay on Janet/Justin. I like your style and enjoy your writings.
Smiles, CYndi

Re: Excellent points, Cyn. (Reply to this comment)

Hey Bad Kitty--BINGO! You nailed it. It wouldn't be a big deal IF . . .
We're pretty free wheeling around here, so basically I just tell the kids: "It takes a boob to show her boob on the Super Bowl." They laugh. No big deal really.
I do understand others who find it very objectionable though. That includes a lot of my neighbors. And, they have a right to object to content that they find objectionable and to NOT have that foisted off in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The main complaint here is really that the boob display became the focus when the kids really wanted to relive that game and talk about it around the neighborhood. So, media is more the problem than a clown who tried to (as you mentioned) say it was an accident. I don't wear my star rings when I sing either, so well . . . you know. I didn't buy all that crap either.
