A few days ago, I underwent Lasik surgery. Prior to doing so, I heard all kinds of stories from all kinds of sources, including comments made in this forum. Some of these were encouraging; others were very disconcerting. Now that my Lasik procedure is over, I have found that - for me - not only some but in fact all of the negative comments I heard were unfounded. It couldn't have gone better. I now see 20/20 uncorrected, as opposed to 20/200 uncorrected and 20/40 with glasses. I have no complications of any kind. All this for the low, low cost of $1200 total.
Which brings me to my real point. There was a statement made in this forum that, "I don't think there is any way that your eyesight with lasik can be as good as with well-fitted spectacles." This statement is inaccurate. It may be true of some people, but obviously it is not true of all (it wasn't for me). I heard other negative statements that proved false as well. In fact, an employee at my Lasik eye center told me that EVERYONE gets dry eye from Lasik. Well, maybe a lot do, but not everyone does - because I didn't. If anything, my eyes are less dry now than before Lasik.
Now, I believe my situation with dry eye (or lack thereof) is probably not typical, based on what I've heard from others. But I mention it to illustrate the danger in making universal statements (both positive and negative) regarding the outcome of Lasik. Not everyone has complications. Not everyone has "halos." Not everyone still needs corrective lenses. And not everyone has as good of an experience as I did.
