Blame Canada.... For great prices!
Jun 16, 2007 (Updated Jun 16, 2007)
I have always known that I could save big bucks on prescription and non-prescription drugs by going through online Canadian pharmacies, but for some reason I never got around to actually investigating the price differences. I began searching some of the Canadian pharmacies a couple of years ago after finding out that my prescription "Nizoral 2%" (an anti-dandruff shampoo) could be purchased from Canadian pharmacies for nearly 1/4th the price of what it sells for in the US, and that it wouldn't even require a prescription! After browsing a multitude of Canadian pharmacies I discovered Get Canadian Drugs Online Store that not only offered the lowest price tag on my shampoo, but they also offered some other impressive attributes that put them ahead of the herd of online Canadian pharmacies.
About this store:
Get Canadian Drugs is a fully licensed online pharmacy that is, needles to say, located in Canada (BC to be exact). Though a lot of the products at this online store will require prescriptions, there is also a huge selection of nutritional supplements and over-the-counter products, i.e. beauty creams, cold medicines, etc. etc.
Navigation/Ease of ordering:
Navigating around this store is, for the most part, simple. Get Canadian Drugs Online Store lists its main categories ( Prescription, non-prescription, personal care, nutrition, wellness, specialty, and veterinary) neatly on the top half of its home page. Products are then logically arranged in subcategories to help narrow your search. If you know exactly what you are looking for, there is a search engine, however it doesn't work very well. Even if you type into the search box the most specific product name, i.e. "Neutrogena Visibly Firm Night Cream," hundreds of non-related products will be listed; kind of defeats the whole purpose of a search engine if it's not going to list the specific product.
Checking-out is simple. If you are purchasing non-prescription products you just have to fill out one page of personal info and one page of credit info, which will be stored securely for future purchases. If you are a returning customer, all that is required is your e-mail address with your Get Canadian Drugs Online Store password. Buying prescriptions, however is a bit more time consuming. If you are buying a prescription you must call Get Canadian Drugs or send them your prescription either by snail mail or fax. You also will have to give them a copy of your ID (for first time users) so they know you are who you say you are. I haven't yet ordered a prescription from these guys, but it doesn't sound any more difficult than ordering prescriptions from American online pharmacies, i.e. Drugstore.com.
The selection at Get Canadian Drugs is generally impressive, but I do have my gripes in this department (I'll get to my gripes in a moment). When it comes to non-prescription products, this store features all types of products ranging from eye drops all the way to acne medication. While most of the main categories do offer a good selection of products and a wide array of name brands, some of the categories don't have a single product listed. For example, by clicking on the "specialty" icon, absolutely no results are displayed; why have a product category if no products are listed? @#! When it comes to prescriptions, there is an equally impressive selection, however you won't find any narcotics at this store. Why Get Canadian Drugs doesn't sell narcotic drugs is beyond me, but I think they believe that it's not ethical or safe to sell them. I dont take narcotic drugs, but I have in the past for pain, and many people do need them for certain illnesses, so I dont see why selling them would be so bad if a doctors prescription is presented. After all, a non- narcotic drug can be just as dangerous as a narcotic drug if it is not taken as prescribed. Moving along- Get Canadian Drugs features both name brand and generic name brands that can literally save you hundreds of dollars on some prescriptions.
While I felt that I got the best price possible on my Nizoral shampoo, the prices, in general, range anywhere from "excellent" to downright "outrageous." Keep in mind, just because it's from a Canadian store, does not mean it's going to be cheaper than what it would be in America. Though most prescriptions are indeed less money than those sold in America, some of the prescriptions that I compared at Get Canadian Drugs were up to 30% more than my local high-priced pharmacy. My 120 ml bottle of Nizoral came to just $19 dollars after shipping (if I buy just a single bottle), which is nearly 50-70% less than what the US sells it for. Since shipping doesn't go up if I purchase more than one bottle (unless my order goes over $90), I can save even more when I buy in bulk. Huge savings like this aren't always the case: so make sure you do your homework before making any final buying decisions. Payment methods include personal checks, money orders, and major credit/debit cards.
Shipping charges at Get Canadian Drugs are based solely on the total cost of your order. Shipping charges are pretty simple - if your order totals $90 or less you will be charged $6.99 for standard air mail shipping or 9.99 for express shipping. If you order totals more than $90 you are automatically upgraded to Express mail for $9.99,which also includes insurance. Overall, shipping charges are very reasonable, especially if you are buying in bulk. Get Canadian Drugs definitely didn't make any money off of my order with their shipping fees.
The return policy at Get Canadian Drugs is a bit on the stingy side. To explain, merchandise must be returned (if you want a full refund including shipping costs) within just 14 days post delivery. If you open a product and find that it's just not to your liking, Get Canadian Drugs will still accept it, however you will not receive cash back. Instead, you will receive store credit worth 50% of the value of the product: kind of lame if you ask me. Other online pharmacies, i.e. Drugstore.com offer a much better return policy, providing less hassle, better refunds, and a full 30 days to return products.
How long did it take for my order to arrive?
Get Canadian Drugs claims that it should take between 11-14 days using their standard shipping, however I have never had to wait longer than a week for my order to arrive, and that's when using just the basic shipping. I have ordered 9 bottles of Nizoral shampoo from Get Canadian Drugs over the past 2 years and most of the time my order will arrive even faster than orders I make same day from companies located in the lower 48: impressive! -A nice touch- If your order does not arrive within 14 business days, your next order will receive free Express shipping.
I usually order 3 bottles of Nizoral 2% at a time, and each time my order has always been accurate. What has really impressed me is the way this store packages their products. Unlike many online health stores that use those cheap bubble-mailer envelopes, Get Canadian Drugs uses sturdy boxes to ship products. And, although Nizoral shampoo is far from being a fragile item, they always package my shampoo as if they were shipping glass: they use plenty of packing materials. As I have already mentioned, this store definitely made no money off of the $6.99 I paid for shipping. With that being said, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase and the price I paid.
Customer service is excellent. It's unfortunate, however, that customer service isn't available 24-7 (the 1-800 number is only open M-F from 6AM-5PM PST and Sat/Sun 7AM-3 PM PST). The representatives always do an excellent job answering my questions and have been very patient with me and the oodles of questions I initially threw at them regarding the whole process of ordering prescriptions from Canada versus the US.
Get Canadian Drugs definitely has its faults: the website format could be improved, the return policy is stingy, and some of the prices tags are actually more than what they are at American online pharmacies. However, at the same time, Get Canadian Drugs offers a good selection of prescription and over the counter products, fast & inexpensive shipping, and excellent customer service. When all is said and done, this store's good attributes certainly outweigh its pitfalls. Get Canadian Drugs Online Store is recommended to anyone wanting to save some cash on prescription and over the counter medicine/general health related products. I will most definitely be shopping here again.
