The Grammys Are Coming And I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (Rock)

The Bottom Line Watch as Ben Moody uses Avril Lavigne as a baseball bat and swats Amy Lee upside the head with her during Evanescence's acceptance speech.

Welcome to the third of five installments predicting the winners for the 46th Annual Grammy Awards, honoring the best in...wait, hold up. You know what the deal is and I'm not an advertisement.

The rock category probably contains the most question marks. Again, many of the categories are “old-guard” versus “new-school”. And surprise! Hardy perennial Sheryl Crow is not nominated in any of the categories. Look for Dave Grohl and/or The White Stripes to clean up big this year.

BEST ROCK SONG

“Bring Me To Life” Evanescence
“Calling All Angels” Train
"Disorder In The House” Warren Zevon & Bruce Springsteen
“Someday” Nickelback
“Seven Nation Army” The White Stripes

A tough category to call. Train were winners before, but I think it's unlikely they'll repeat. The critically reviled Nickelback made a pretty good song, but they're not liked enough to capture this one. Zevon could again get the sympathy vote here but I predict the winner as The White Stripes, who may lay waste to much of the rock category this time around.

WILL WIN: The White Stripes
SHOULD WIN: The White Stripes
ACTUAL WINNER: "Seven Nation Army" The White Stripes

BEST ROCK ALBUM

“Audioslave” Audioslave
“One By One” Foo Fighters
“The Long Road” Nickelback
“More Than You Think You Are” matchbox twenty
“Fallen” Evanescence

Another tough one. Nickelback & matchbox are seen more as pop/rock acts than true rock acts. The fact that the Stripes are not included here is a bit of a head-scratcher. Evanescence may be seen as too new to snatch this trophy. The Foos are Grammy favorites, so they'll take this prize even though Audioslave's bone-=crunching debut was my personal favorite rock album of the year.

WILL WIN: Foo Fighters
SHOULD WIN: : Audioslave
ACTUAL WINNER: "One By One" Foo Fighters

BEST MALE ROCK VOCAL PERFORMANCE

“New Killer Star” David Bowie
“Down In The Flood” Bob Dylan
“If I Could Fall In Love” Lenny Kravitz
“Gravedigger” Dave Matthews
“Return Of Jackie & Judy” Tom Waits

Three legends against two guys who...have been around a pretty long time too. Actually, “If I Could Fall In Love”, the Kravitz song, has been around for a long time too!! It's been out since October, 2001!! Lenny won't win, although his three-year streak of wins in this category was pretty recent. Neither will Dylan or Waits, even though Bowie has a slight chance. No one heard Matthews' fatalistic dirge “Gravedigger”, as radio proclaimed it too morbid for rotation. However, this will mark Dave's first ever solo Grammy.

WILL WIN: Dave Matthews
SHOULD WIN: Dave Matthews
ACTUAL WINNER: "Gravedigger" Dave Matthews

BEST FEMALE ROCK VOCAL PERFORMANCE

“Trouble” Pink
“Are You Happy Now” Michelle Branch
“Losing Grip” Avril LaVigne
“Time Of Our Lives” Bonnie Raitt
'Righteously” Lucinda Williams

Are Avril, Branch & Pink rock? Well, if Pat Benatar or Tina Turner, who have more wins in this category than any other female artist, are rock, then these three ladies are. However, none of them are perceived as rock by critics who feel that THEY know music better than the people performing it, which leaves the title to Grammy fave Raitt and long-overdue alt-country queen Williams. Seeing as Raitt has been doing a slow fade for a few years now, Lucinda may cop a Grammy here, although I think Pink's ballsy, brassy Joplin-esque vocals should take the prize here.

WILL WIN: Lucinda Williams
SHOULD WIN:: Pink
ACTUAL WINNER: "Trouble" Pink

BEST ROCK PERFORMANCE BY A DUO OR GROUP WITH VOCAL

“There There” Radiohead
“Calling All Angels” Train
“Seven Nation Army” The White Stripes
“Times Like These” Foo Fighters
“Disorder In The House” Warren Zevon & Bruce Springsteen

Four of the six artists nominated in this category are previous Grammy winners. (all except Zevon & The Stripes). One of the two Grammy virgins will win tonight, with my vote again going for the White Stripes. However, Dave Grohl has proven himself an engaging songwriter, and I was stunned when I felt my eyes mist as the acoustic version of “Times Like These” played during a tribute to John freakin' Ritter.

WILL WIN: The White Stripes
SHOULD WIN: Foo Fighters
ACTUAL WINNER: "Disorder In The House" Warren Zevon & Bruce Springsteen

BEST HARD ROCK PERFORMANCE

“Like A Stone” Audioslave
“Go With The Flow” Queens Of The Stone Age
“Just Because” Jane's Addiction
“Straight Out Of Line” Godsmack
“Bring Me To Life” Evanescence

Jane's Addiction's comeback went absolutely nowhere, while Godsmack slipped quietly into platinum-ville. Evanescence isn't exactly considered hard-rock and QOTSA's record seems like it's just a bit too old. That leaves the softest track on Audioslave's hit album, which should get an award just for Tom Morello's awesome solo on the bridge.

WILL WIN: Audioslave
SHOULD WIN : Audioslave
ACTUAL WINNER: "Bring Me To Life" Evanescence feat. Paul McCoy

BEST METAL PERFORMANCE

'St. Anger” Metallica
“Did My Time” Korn
“Inhale” Stone Sour
“Smothered” Spineshank
“Mobscene” Marilyn Manson

Hell will freeze over before Marilyn Manson gets a Grammy. Spineshank is too unknown and Stone Sour is too old. Korn has an outside chance, but never bet against Metallica in a netal category. Unless, of course, Jethro Tull is nominated in the same category.

WILL WIN: Metallica
SHOULD WIN: Metallica
ACTUAL WINNER: "St. Anger" Metallica

BEST ALTERNATIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCE

“()” Sigur Ros
“Fight Test” The Flaming Lips
“Fever To Tell” Yeah Yeah Yeahs
“Elephant” The White Stripes
“Hail To The Thief” Radiohead

Come on now. This category may be for an “alternative” performance, but usually the artist/band with the most popular/biggest selling record wins. In this case, that would be either The White Stripes or Radiohead. It appears to be all about Jack & Meg this year, so I'm betting on them to take the prize. Does Renee Zellweger get a mention in the acceptance speech?

WILL WIN: The White Stripes
SHOULD WIN: : The White Stripes
ACTUAL WINNER: "Elephant" The White Stripes

And there go the rock categories. Stay tuned, because we have hip-hop coming up next.
