The Captain's Top Ten Films of 2003... (and a couple of turkeys, too)
by captaind | Feb 09 '04
Watch the Top Ten. Avoid the Turkeys. Annoy Shannon by including "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" in your Top Ten. :-D

Well, cap'n, your list is different. FINDING NEMO seems to be its intellectual zenith!

All the best.

Ah well not everyone can love it... when I saw it again several plot flaws did come to light that I hadn't noticed first time round - but I still enjoyed it. Maybe I just wanted to be different... I've spent all of this year so far in complete disagreement with most people about films - I liked Cold Mountain (it was only shown over here in Jan 2004) and couldn't stand either Peter Pan or Lost in Translation - but at least I disagree for the sake of my own individual weirdness, not simply for the sake of disagreeing... erm there was probably a point there somewhere but I don't know what it was...

Hey Shannon!

I was wondering when you were going to show up - was it just painful seeing LoEG in another top ten? (Looks like I've blown what little chance I had of making TR...) The car chase in Venice was indeed ridiculous - as was the whole movie - but it was fun... (hey, why are you taking me off your WOT?!? Stop that!)

Looking forward to seeing your "Worst of" list - if there's less than 3 of my top ten in there I'll be disappointed!!

CaptainMyTopTen=YourBottomTen

Doc, are you ready for the challenges that lay ahead?

...League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...

Yo, Mr. Needstoseemorefilms, you and Doc are going to be the death of me yet. I mean, c'mon now a car chase through the "streets" of Venice? Do you think Mina Harker only drinks... German beer... or do you think she really does go for the vein?

Shannon ...

"but boy do you need to see some more movies" - true, very true! I have to admit I haven't even heard of some of the ones on your list! (I had intended to include a list of films I wanted to see but.. er.. I forgot... but I really want to see Mystic River and Master & Commander, for a start...

"Of course if we all agreed with each other things would be unbelievably dull" - but of course... for a start, if I'd actually liked Lost in Translation, I may have by now lost all respect for myself...

Cheers Chris! (Oh btw your tips for avoiding films brought out in Jan / Feb is true enough, although I did think Cold Mountain was excellent - it wasn't released here in the UK till Jan 2004 - yet again we're behind the times!...)

but boy do you need to see some more movies.

A couple of your choices are pretty awful in my opinion and several others while enjoyable films were in no stretch of the imagination best of material.

Of course if we all agreed with each other things would be unbelievably dull.

Nice job.

yeah, and you forgot that all the time you spent studying in school I spent beating up the kids who studied. With that in mind, I fail to see the threat to myself in either world.

Nah - you just didn't understand it. It was a compliment.

Peta Wilson ugly? Yep, afraid so. I can't help it if you're very easily impressed...

"Carlnator (hey, when you're given a cool nickname I stay stick with it)" - when did you get a cool nickname? I look forward to seeing you use it - you obviously haven't done so yet...

Hmmm... well I liked the first Matrix film and it's the only one that stands up on its own merits. The second was sheer dross, and the third was (to my mind) very good, but probably not as good as the first.

And you're right - I really must see Master and Commander - I'll probably wait till Carl gets the DVD and borrow it off him1 ;-D

I'm afraid you just slapped the Doc in the face with that comment Dave, disgraceful thing to do to an Epinions Legend!!! >:(

Anyway, just how serious should I take the opinion of someone who would describe Peta Wilson as ugly?!?! None at all I'm afraid. :P

Somehow, I find a list on this topic that doesn't include Master and Commander is sorely deficient. You have to see that one; it's awesome.

The only one on your list that made me want to gag is Matrix. I found the first two movies incredibly tedious as they persistently used computers for religious metaphors. They tried too hard to be meaningful. Their reputation as geek movies was well earned. I never made the effort for the third.

But these are your favorites. I find it hard to argue because you're stating what you liked in 2003 and there's no wrong in that. I'm sure there are plenty who disagree with me.

Hey Gavia!

Only 4? Erm... on most people's top tens I've rarely seen more than 2 - though of the 2003 ones I can usually make an exception!

Happy catching up on the best films of last year!!

Hey Amanda!

Well you obviously have exquisite taste! ;-)

Fortunately, after seeing the first Charlie's Angels film, I decided not to torture myself with the second - though even the trailer could have got in the worst 10 of 2003 on its own merit...
