Just Say No To Howard Johnson

Written: Aug 23 '01
Pros:Close to the Airport
Cons:Dirty, Noisy, Rude Employees
The Bottom Line: If there was only one hotel left in the city, only then short of sleeping on the street would I choose this hotel.

Traveling as much as I do for work and pleasure you get a feel for the good, the bad and the ugly of hotels. Howard Johnson was the ugly. It started out by the shuttle drive nearly killing us with his reckless driving and almost running into a train. Check-in should have had us running for the door. The Employees were rude, un-kept, and didn't know their job. I can understand being new on the job, that is acceptable . But manners folks! Took us almost 30 minutes checking in, though we had made our reservations on line, and they had all our information. After standing, listening to some girl smack her gum, and pick her teeth, I was fed up. Finally we get our key and off we go to the room to freshen up and head on our way to SHOPPING! Walking into the room, you are blown away by the stench of a horrible room deodorizer, it was so over powering my eyes are watering at this point. It was as though they were trying to hide another smell. The walls were grimy, the chairs were soiled, the beds hard as rocks, the shower was slimy and hard to turn on, the topper was the sticky bathroom floors. I was disgusted and couldn't believe someone had even cleaned this room. I was scared to put anything down for fear of cooties. One night in the Howard Johnson Portland Branch was enough to turn me off and never again return to the hotel. I am thoroughly disgusted someone would even run such a place and call themselves an elegant hotel chain. I have seen more elegance in the sewers of New York.
