The first paragraph of this review describes my situation, except that I don't have any Linux expertise (daughter's boyfriend set this up) and my company uses Shiva VPN. I too decided that SMC7004 series was a better bet than Linksys or D-Link but also got very confused over the relative merits of the 7004FW, the 7004ABR and the 7004VBR (all non wireless), and the wierd pricing. One has a built-in print server (handy and a separate one is pricey) and RS232 for dial-up, the other two seem the same except for auto MDX/MDXI and the speed of the WAN port (anyone who has 100MB/s should probably be buying Cisco or something anyway).

I appreciate the reference to decent tech support, something apparently lacking in competing products.

The one thing not mentioned is the front LAN jacks on the FW and ABR which I don't like. I prefer my cables to be out of the way at the back as on the VBR and most other non-rack mount devices.

A very timely and helpful review to me, even though it's actually a year old.
