Motorola Talk about pager

Genre Electronics

What made me decide? Two-way communication cheaper than cellular service, and no per minute charge.

3 good things
2-way communication
Easy to use keyboard
Good light for usage in the dark, the keys light up as well.

3 bad things
Service is a little dodgy
For such a small device, it can certainly be a battery hog

Ease of use, learning curve: Very easy to use. It takes a while to learn where they hide some of the keys and characters, but not too long.

How to in a nutshell: My pager came ready to go, the quick start instructions had me sending a page within ten minutes. The address book makes it very easy to get a quick note to anyone with an email address. The first time you enter information into the address book is tedious though. The pager is very good as well about letting you know if a page was successfully sent or not. Unfortunately with the tendancy of the service to be in an unserviceable area, it happens too often that the message is not, in fact, sent.

Cost $180.00

Any hidden costs Monthly fee of $30.00, 1 AA battery once a week, every 2 to 3 weeks for high end batteries such as E squared.

Was it worth the money? Because of some of the bugs in the service, I think the monthly fee could be a little lower.

Any points of disappointment After having the pagers about a week I discovered there were some severe limitations on the sending and receiving capability. If you are in a building with lots of insulation, the pager will not send or receive. At some times, the message is received several times, with different parts of it garbled.

Would I recommend it? With the recent emergence of “around town” flat rate cellular service, I would not recommend this pager. For about the same price you can make and receive phone calls rather than text messaging. However for constant contact with friends who stay glued to the computer or who live too far for phone calls, I do recommend it.

Would I buy it again? Considering the fact that my husband and I purchased these pagers for communication while he is at work, and he cannot send or receive messages until his lunch break when he leaves the building, this creates problems for us. I do use it very often to talk to my best friend who is long distance, and this saves me a lot on long distance charges. If I were to do it again, I would get him a cellular phone with text messaging and get the pager for myself.
