So yes, here we are again with yet another list. This time I give you my 10 favorite Musicals..and as always it has been in draft for months while I kept rearranging things. There comes a point where you just can't keep looking at it and it demands to be posted. So there ya have it.
Again, in no particular order......
Camelot ~ This is the usual slant, with Arthur being the king of Camelot and marrying the gorgeous Guenevere.. only to have her fall in love with his best friend and finest knight, Lancelot. Of course we have the foul son Mordred plotting Camelot's destruction at every opportunity.... Excellent songs that will stick in your head for days. Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave, and Franco Nero.
Jesus Christ Superstar ~ Webber's music was inspired in this. There's just no other way to put it. The songs are extremely memorable, and several are just plain fun.. such as Herod's much quoted Prove to me that you're no fool, walk across my swimming pool. This was probably my favorite part of the whole musical. It's all very showy (as Herod is usually depicted) and just a laugh riot. You've got Herod in a pair of white shorts surrounded by all manner of miscreant in the most flamingly outrageous costumes.. and they by far got the best lyrics
Tommy ~ This is The Who's 1975 entry into the world of rock movies. I was pregnant at the time it debuted in theaters and going through severe morning sickness that lasted all. damn. day... but I wasn't going to miss this for the world! Tis about a boy who is deaf, dumb, and blind and going through some major ordeals yet somehow manages to become the Pinball Wizard. It's much deeper than that but you'll have to see it for yourself. This one is chalk full of famous names from rock legends Elton John and Roger Daltry to big Hollywood names like Jack Nicholson. The songs are energetic and driving, making it very hard to just sit still during this one.
The Court Jester ~ Wonderful romp through the Medieval countryside with Danny Kaye. Made in 1956, this one is mostly straight dialogue but has numerous fun musical numbers by Kaye. The Music Man ~ I've liked every incarnation of this wonderful tale dealing with a charismatic con-man selling non-existant marching band progam, but the best still is the 1962 version with Robert Preston in the lead role. Again, fun songs and a cute storyline.
Hair ~ It's about peace. It's about love. It's about lack of prejudice. It's about protesting the Viet Nam war. We follow Claude as he leaves the farm in Oklahoma and heads to New York City. He has two days to sight see before he has to report for military duty. Man what a two days those are! He happens across a band of free-wheeling hippies who take him in hand and show him a good time. It's a coming together of differing ideologies. It's one movie you should not miss. Dorsey Wright, Treat Williams, John Savage.
Wizard of Oz ~ Yeah ok sue me. I love this 1939 Victor Fleming movie about a gal who gets whisked away from Kansas by a tornado and ends up in a strange land known as Oz. Granted, those damn flying monkeys gave me nightmares as a kid for weeks.. but still I adored it. This one plays every year on TV repeatedly, but it's still one that should be in your collection. Fun songs that will stick with you for life. Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Burt Lahr. If I only had a brain
Labyrinth ~ David. Bowie. *drool* this is probably the sexiest thing he has ever done. Man was he ever hot in this 1986 flick about a sweet young thang who has to solve the riddle of the labyrinth in order to save her baby brother. Bowie is the Goblin King and ooh la la. He can kidnap me any ol time! He does, of course, sing.
Rocky Horror Picture Show ~ The basic story is about a young couple who have just gotten engaged.. Brad and Janet. On their way to see their old teacher and friend, Dr. Scott, the car breaks down and they stumble upon an eerie castle in the storm. Extremely fun songs and storyline. So good that this movie is on several of my "best of" lists. Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick.
Mary Poppins ~ Just a spoonfull of sugar helps the medicine go down! Wow how I loved this as a kid. This 1964 movie stars Julie Andrews as a quite magical nanny who comes to stay with the family of a very cold banker and starts just a-meddling with the dynamic.. in a good and highly amusing way. A delightful children's musical which I still enjoy as an adult.
