...But what about Little Shop of Horrors with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis? If you haven't seen that one, you really should!

Are my eyes deceiving me or did you leave off Chicago?

Surely it's an unfortunate oversight. I hate to be a back seat party pooper but Chicago was wonderful. Surely something else is not as deserving.

Hard to please everyone isn't it.

Aren't you glad I didn't mention Paint your Wagon

This is a great list of musicals and I just saw your comment on "Singin'...". That was an incredible scene in "Clockwork". I actually considered putting Clockwork in my favorite musicals but I guess that would be stretching it. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

"Well, at least you didn't include 'South Pacific,' ..."

But ... but ... but ... I LIKED "South Pacific"... although I never did know what those French kids were singing about.

I was hoping Moulin Rouge would make your Top 10, but I guess not everyone can be as big a fan of it as me. ;)

I don't really like any of these, although, as you can probably tell, I'm not a "musical movie" person.

Having said that, where's Funny Girl???? That was the best!!

Great list, in spite of my lack of love for any of these films. You just have to consider the source on this one!

My best,

Interesting list Doc! The only musical I've ever wanted to see more than once is "Rent". It's soooo fun, beautiful...and gay! No "Rent" for you though I take it. Ahh well. Good read, good read.

You really do owe it to yourself to "sit down and watch" West Side Story. It's one of those rarities: a filmed version of an excellent stageplay, that's actually better than the play. Of course, the conventions of the 60's are hard to overlook, but once you get past them, you'll settle in for one of the best musicals ever made. Period.

Moreover, West Side Story was, I believe, the first film in history to have all the credits shown at the end of the film, and not the beginning. Quite a radical concept for 1961.

Court Jester is definitely one of my favourites along with many on your list. Danny Kaye was a genius. Camelot is another fave... and you just have to see My Fair Lady! Great, great list that made me remember some wonderful films.

I adore Camelot. So neener neener.

Believe it or not, I've never sat down and watched West Side Story.

...someone prepares a list of the '10 best" of anything, that someone else is going to object, so let me be the first. I all but gagged on "Camelot," and would never have included it in such a list, but that's just my opinion, and I didn't write the list. Also, what happened to "West Side Story, " probably one of the best filmed musicals ever? Huh?

Well, at least you didn't include "South Pacific," the all-time worst filmed version of an otherwise excellent stageplay. And, lastly, "Tommy" did age well, in my opinion. So there. Nyah, nyah nyah.

Doc -
I have to agree with you that St. Pepper was lacking. To me, it looked...well...cheap. But, I liked the way they made all the music tell a whole story, with very little talking. In that way, I thought it was cleverly done.

Chris..

I've seen very few of those you list. I don't look at lists as comprehensive, but more of just what I like from what I've seen. I do go back and chenge them occasionally if I see something I hadn't seen before and really like it. ;)

Which is it that has more than one version that needs a date/director? The only one I can see that may fit that is Wizard of Oz.. I'll try to get to that today. :)

Mary Poppins is one of my husband's all time favorites too. The song I remember most from it is supercalifragilisticexpealidocious (sp?). Anyway, it's a great film and great list. Sheila

Pretty good list though there are a few you mentioned where a year and director is needed to better identify which version you mean.

Never thought of Labrynth as a musical.

Can't believe you haven't included even one of the Fred Astair Ginger Rogers musicals.

And all of these musicals are great too:

It's Always Fair Weather, All That Jazz, Sweet Charity, 42nd Street, Babes in Arms, The boy Friend, Broadway Melody of 1938, Bye Bye Birdie, Dames, maybe Cry Baby, Everyone Says I Love You, Cover Girl, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Forum, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Guys and Dolls, the Band Wagon, Help, Hard Days Night, How to Succeed in Business Without REally Trying, In the Good Old Summertime, Le Million, The Muppet Movie, Royal Wedding, Silk Stockings, Born to Dance, Top Hat, Summer Stock, Swingtime, Bells are Ringing, Carmen Jones, The Buddy Holly Story, Daddy Long Legs, Fiddler on the Roof, Down Argentine Way, Follow the Boys, I think you mentioned Funny Girl, The Great Waltz, the Glenn Miller Story, Jailhouse Rock, La Bamba, Miss Sadie Thompson, Oliver, Orchestra Wives, The Red Shoes, The Rose, Sarafina, Show Boat, Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Young man with a Horn, Zoot suit...

etc.

Yanno what's odd? Me. I've yet to see My Fair Lady

I'll have to remedy that soon.

Know what's odder still? I play Camelot at least once a week...

Have you seen "Tommy" lately? I have. It has not aged well! I know you have this peculiar attachment to "Camelot," but I can't imagine an argument for it being better than the previous Lerner/Lowe megahit "My Fair Lady."

If I do a list, I think it will have no overlaps (definitely plucking Cabaret from the also-rans, plus Band Wagon, Singing in the Rain, Cover Girl...)
