daredevil77's Full Review: Stan Lee ( editor ) - The Essential Spider-Man: Am...
When Spider-Man first hit the comic scene in the 60s, he revolutionised the medium. Here was a hero that was all to human. He had to balance his work, study and social life (not to mention fighting crime).
While the morals and messages expressed in this volume are still very applicable, the means in which the are expressed are very outdated. The origin of Spider-Man is one of the greatest and heart-wrenching stories told in comics, however reading this doesn't have that effect anymore. It's just too campy.
However this is a great option if you're a Spidey fan, and just want to read how it all began, this is perfect.
Otherwise, I'd check out Ultimate Spider-Man, available at you local comic retailer or news stand. It retells basically the same story, but has be brought up to speed with today's society.
