Cherie - one section I'm thinking of doing is "when the unthinkable happens", which will deal with that very subject. So if you feel you might be able to write something about it, look out for the next update, which will include a call for submissions.

Susie - will do, many thanks.

Peggy - so sorry to hear that. If you feel you would be comfortable writing something to celebrate his life, I'm sure I can find room for it in the book / ebook.

Sheely - thanks! Most people do, until they're affected by it in one way or another. I've worked in Oncology for about a year now and 99% of what I now know about cancer has been learnt in that year...

Petra - hope your musician doesn't mind being contributed! Kudos - candy bar? Hmmm... would taste better than what it really does mean, I guess. A write off? That's not such a bad idea - I'll certainly thin about it. (German-British think tank?!? A truly novel idea! I love it!!) World domination? Nah... done it - it was boooooring. (Come, Pinky...)

Arthur - thanks for that! You had me wondering for a while if it should be somewhere else - having to justify it to myself was a good thing. But if I do take up Petra's idea of a WO, then it'll be posted in "Messages to the epinions Community" - I promise! And thanks for the read and rate - each one helps it become that little bit more visible, and increases its chance of success.

Sue - Thanks for your support. Statistics show that a huge number of people are affected by cancer directly or indirectly - but each one is far more than a statistc to their friends and family. That's what I want to get across in the book.

Thats all for now! Another update coming soon (it'll be the last one for a while, I'll be busy working on the proper website) and thanks again for all the support - it's really made the effort of trying to get this going more than worth it!

(Alerts have been down until yesterday, or I would have done this earlier.)

OK -- I see your reasoning. I'll correct my "Off Topic" rating.

just what the hell is kudos anyway?!?!)

I know, I know!!! It's a health candy bar. I used to buy them when they made the cookies 'n cream kind, but now they don't sell those anymore.

Hey ... how do you stir the Epinions masses? You do a write-off. We should think of a related subject to do a write-off about, add the rest of the info pointing to the project pages/site somewhere and start collecting the "notification bystanders" of all those participating.

Perhaps film write-off on a movie about illness or something much much more interesting and fun than that .... let's start a German/British think tank and figure out something.

Okay ... something other than world domination for a change.

Hmmm... of course, I only have a musician to contribute. Maybe I'll make him tell me some stories and write them down for him.

And best of all, your idea germinated

You're doing such a wonderful thing here Dave and I'm sorry to say that the only way I can help is to put a link in my profile page for you. Unfortunately, anyone I knew that had cancer, all passed away from it. Most recently, one of my childhood friend's father. He had colon cancer and once they did all they could for him, they gave him 6 months.....he only lasted 2 weeks. It was awful and I felt so bad for my friend because her father's passing was so sudden. They all thought they had a little more time than 2 weeks. Keep up the great work and please let us know how things progress!!

Just wanted to thank everyone who's promised their help in one way or another. There's also been a couple of people from The People's Poet promising help, so altogether the two main communities that I'm part of online are really coming together for this one. It really makes me more determined than ever to get this project going properly.

Look out for an update on Monday...

Thanks again,

Dave

Ok I don't know anyone who has had cancer except my niece had a form of leukemia and fortunately she pulled through that several years ago.

I will however put a link to this review on my next few reviews for you. Once you get it all together I will be glad to support it either on my profile page or reviews. The reviews get more hits than my page though.

I lost my Grandma to cancer and my Granddaddy had it too. I'd be happy to post a link on my profile page. If there is anything else I can do to help you count me in. I'm just an email away.

My best~

Aw Lori, I thought you said you got the all-clear a few months back

On the boobs yes, but not on the colon.

They were like.. we can't do anything but either remove the entire colon (not!) or just give ya meds to make you more comfortable... I was like.. OH! I get to keep my boobs though!

They thought I'd lost my mind. Still do. heh.

Ok.. damn it.. back to the streets.. Hags is such a slave driver!

Doc.. you just reminded me of some of the worst lyrics ever... Snap's song "Rhythm is a Dancer" - remember that? ("I'm as serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer"...) Oh boooooy....

That would be great if he / she would be willing to do it.

I hope to have another update by Monday (and yes, I will still be posting it in Health Non-Fiction unless anyone convinces me it doesn't belong here...)

I knew someone was pushing Doc out onto the streets, but I never thought it would be you!! (Actually I thought it was 29th...) Stop it at once - she's got to have enough strength left to write something for my book... (no money in that either, but huge kudos - just what the hell is kudos anyway?!?!)

Aw Lori, I thought you said you got the all-clear a few months back - were they only looking for mets or where you just making sure you didn't have people being sorry for you??

Anyway, if you want no sympathy, I respect you far too much to give you sympathy. Will hopefully be ready for submissions soon...

Hi Arthur!

I appreciate your comment and yes, Messages to the epinions community might be an appropriate place to post this.

But...

It is non-fiction.

And it is about health matters.

So what's off-topic about it?

(Many other posts in this section are simply people saying how they feel about being ill - whether it be cancer or whatever - are they all "Off Topic" too?)

(I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong, I just can't see your point of view. If you convince me I'll happily move it.)

Of course I'll link to it. And I just may be able to convince someone I know who is both a cancer survivor and a good writer to contribute something. Keep us posted.

Doc, get your sorry as back out on the street. You ain't makin' any money for me by writing comments.

Dave...

Let me know, I'll contribute. Twice I've been told I'm terminal... once 17 years ago, and once a few months ago....

I don't like the last to be terribly well known, because folks get all maudlin on me... I plan to beat this one just like I did the last one.

If one person comes in here with a sympathy post I'll kick their butt.

Thanks so much to everyone who's commented so far and promised help in one way or another. I will be posting updates (under subject line "BMP Project - Update 1" etc) as and when I have anything relevant to tell you. At the moment I'm finalising my draft for the different segments of the book - I have it pretty firmly in my head what I want to do, I just need to put it down on paper (well, on the screen at any rate), get a few comments on that, and then finalise it. At the moment I'm also trying to tie down whether or not TPP will be the publisher, and am contacting Macmillan to see whether they have a list of companies known to be interested in sponsoring this sort of project. I will be designing at least a basic website soon and will let you know about that, too.

I estimate that if 20-30 well-known eps writers link to it, there is a potential of the link being advertised in some form over a million times a year! Which wouldn't be bad going, even given that the number of referrals to the website and then the number of sales would obviously be significantly less than that...

Anyway thanks again and I'll keep you posted! (May not have time to write any actual reviews for a while... hope I don't lose my new red hat...)

This is a wonderful idea. I had uterine cancer and I'm fine now but I have a tale to tell. A very close friend lost a breast to cancer and the journey I shared with her taught me a lot. My mother-in-law passed away from cancer and she taught me a lot, too. I would be glad to write for your project. I would be glad to post the link on my profile page here at Eps.
