The Bottom Line meedley meedley meedley meedley meedley MEEDLEY MEEDLEY MEEDLEY MEEDLEY MEEDLEY MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! (all you homestar fans know what I'm sayin'...)

Eddie Van Halen. Van Halen I:Eruption.
Jimi Hendrix. Woodstock. The Star Spangled Banner.

You're expecting me to say something more? What? You mean, you haven't heard these?
Stop reading right now. You can't read this article until you've heard these tracks.
Go away, and don't come back until you've gotten edgeamacated.

The rest of you may now proceed to read about a few more of my favorite screamin' guitar solos - these are the solos that will put blisters on your fingers just by listening to them. Especially this first one -

Prince, Let's Go Crazy Prince - Purple Rain
What a way to open an incredible movie, and an even more incredible soundtrack - Prince breaks down reality, first with his spoken word sermon to start the track, then with a marvelous guitar hook featured throughout the song - it's a funkalicious metalfest on guitar! But it's the solo at the end of the song that punches this elevator to an even higher floor - Prince seems to be taking the song to a logical conclusion, the chords are setting up for a resolution of some sort, and he's repeating some phrases, so it's apparent that the track is wrapping up. The band begins to step down towards an ending, there's a lot of synth effects and drum rolls and guitar slashes - it must be finishing, but what happens next is absolutely unreal -

if you still have not yet listened to Eddie and Jimi as instructed, you will not fully comprehend what I am about to say. Now, get going...

Prince conjures a single held note, and all other sounds but his cease - the note shivers as if starting to crack from it's own weight, then begins to rise until it reaches apogee, when it suddenly falls back toward earth at lightning speed in a frenzied electrical display, finally exploding upon the surface, a fireball spreading in all directions. It is a singular display of genius, possessing Hendrix's fire and Van Halen's blazing speed - Prince stands astride two generations of guitar legends, and creates a third with this single effort.

PRINCE UPDATE April 2004
I can now say with authority that Prince is one of the greatest guitarists of our time. plorentz and I went to see Prince in Indianapolis April 12, and Prince put on a dazzling display of funk, rock and blues guitar. It was absolutely amazing...

Joe Satriani, Satch Boogie Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien
Joe Satriani is arguably one of the best all-around guitar talents ever, and he has several quality instrumental albums to back up this statement. He is a technical master, he has published learned texts on technique, modes, styles and musicianship, and all of these things are on display in Satch Boogie. This is a very fast, blues-based barnburner, and it is FUN, plain and simply put. There are a lot of things he stuffs into it's three minutes and thirteen seconds - the song is a virtual guitar textbook all by itself. There are a lot of other incredible Satriani moments on many other songs, but I think this one is his best.

Eddie Van Halen Hot For Teacher Van Halen - 1984
This is a tough one -I've already had to single out Eruption (that thing is far beyond the descriptive abilities of mere mortals), and there are so many more of his works that leave me tongue-tied. The thing I love about Hot For Teacher's solo is just how insanely easy Eddie makes this complex solo sound - plus the fact that the rest of the song isn't exactly a cakewalk - it all sounds so effortless. Of course, you have to recognize his brother Alex and bassist Michael Anthony for contributing their stellar efforts too, but it's Eddie's guitar riffs and flying fingers that make this song special.

------------------------------

OK - there are LOTS of other guitarists who've blazed their way through a guitar solo at warp speed, and some have actually done it well. However, I think my choices are great examples of doing it just right... what do you think? Crank your comments up to '10' and blast us all with your thoughts!
