| RyanRobert's Full Review: Unreal Tournament for Windows |
Unreal Tournament is the best multi-player first person shooter you can find. Instead of doing what many game developers believe they have to do to succeed: trying to totally revolutionize a genre with anything new, Unreal surpasses them by instead refining the first person shooter game to near perfection. But it still does not fail to be truly innovative.
Gameplay
There are six ways to play: Tournament Deathmatch, Tournament Team Deathmatch, Domination, Capture the Flag, Last Man Standing, and Assault.
Tournament Deathmatch is traditional multiplay shooting game that arms players to the teeth with guns against each other and has 'em go at it.
Team Deathmatch puts players into teams.
Domination is Team Deathmatch where each team attempts to hold on to three control points on the map.
Capture the Flag is something your all familiar with. Each team has a flag and each team attempts to steal the other team's flag and bring it home.
Assault is my favorite. One team controls and defends a base. The other team must take over the base and accomplish an objective.
That's enough options right there to keep most everyone happy, but Unreal Tournament goes farther and allows you to vary the style of gameplay from how fast people move to how much damage guns do. The vast number of options and variety you can put into Unreal will make it something you'll be interested in for a long time.
It is a violent game, though. Lot of killing and blood, so it's best kept out of the hands of the wee ones.
Graphics
The graphics pretty good, but a little old. While they are nothing to write home about, they aren't horrendous. You can see everything just right and it allows the gameplay to move along just fine.
UT has over 50 places to battle; from skyscrapers, to pirate ships to outer space. The maps are richly detailed and designed, the best I have ever seen.
Weapons
And what's a good shooter game without big guns? Each of the 12 weapons have two modes giving you in a sense double your artillery and the ability to perform great combination attacks. The weapons you'll have most fun with are:
The Enforcer: a simple but powerful handgun.
The Redeemer: a nuclear warhead that doubles as a guided missile. Lovely.
The Ripper: fires razor blades
Rocket Launcher: fires up to six rockets at once. Secondary fire shoots pipe bombs.
Great for anyone with a raving blood lust. But being able to kill your enemy and everything on its immediate continent takes away from the fun and challenge of just plain shooting each other with a M-16 until someone's head comes off.
Al Bots
The computer controlled players, called Al 'bots,' are very good. If you're playing and don't have enough players, you get bots. The bots perform, not like mindless drones, but like a skilled human player that will even follow your orders in the Team games. They're also highly configurable, allowing you to program their difficulty settings, guns, skill, and such. AI in a FPS than the UT bots; playing offline just as much fun as playing online.
Online
Getting online is very easy with UT. It's a matter of simply entering your password and finding a good server is done quick. Not hard at all.
Plus, your stats are recorded, so you can keep up on how you rank worldwide and brag to the nerds at Circuit City. I've never suddenly been disconnected from the game either, which is a miracle of God or something.
Verdict
UT doesn't really offer us anything a shooting game hasn’t had before, but it's near perfect in the fact that it refined all the aspects of tradional shooting games into something on a whole different level.
If you've never played shooting games before, but want to try, don't get Unreal.
Because once you've played it, ever other shooting game you try to will not come close.
