The Others - Good but not spectacular!

The Bottom Line: Good suspense movie!
My girlfriend and I went to see The Others because we wanted to see something different than a comedy or a movie which is all about the special effects. The Others definitely fit into his category. This movie was full of suspense with a touch of horror added in.
I believe someone who looking for a movie outside the "Summer Blockbuster" would enjoy this movie. It is a nice change of pace. There have been a slew of comedies and action movies this summer. This is the first true suspense movie out since "What Lies Beneath" and The Others is much better. If you are looking for a good drama then go out and see this movie.
The basic plot of this movie has Nicole Kidman and her two children living in their old, large mansion in the 1940's. The husband has been gone for a year and a half and is believed to be killed in the war. The help has suddenly disappeared and Nicole Kidman is looking for someone to replace the servants. Three people show up looking for work. It is found later that these people did not know the jobs were open but simply showed up because they had worked there in the past. This leaves you with a bad feeling about the help.
The children both have a disease where they cannot be in the sunlight or they could die. This gives you a scary setting for the whole movie since the house is dark and without electricity. Most of the movie involves the children and the oldest daughter seeing ghosts. When Nicole Kidman finally believes that the ghosts are in the home she spends her time actually trying to find them. There is a lot of suspense through these parts of the movie. I will not go into any more detail about the movie because that would give away the surprising ending. I will tell you that there are some parts which will force you to jump out of your seat. The girl sitting next to me actually kicked me at one point because she jumped so high.
The only negative I can find is that after seeing the movie I still believe I have seen a movie with a similar ending. I haven't been able to place the movie but I'm sure I have seen this ending elsewhere. The Others is not non-stop action and suspense and this may be why some viewers do not love this movie. I just found it to be a great change of pace in between "Planet of The Apes" and "Rush Hour II."
